How to Design a Website For the iPhone

<P>While most of us working in technology companies are aware of the mobile Internet tsunami, many businesses have yet to embrace the technology by publishing a mobile version of their own website.</P>
<P>Here's how to design a website for the Apple iPhone.</P>
<P><B>1. Planning</B></P>
<P>Get out the scrapbook or a new Google Doc and jot down why you are building a mobile app, who is it for and what you want the app to do.</P>
<P><B>2. Content Creation</B></P>
<P>Then jot which pages are needed and flesh out the content by copying the text from your main website into the Google Doc. To start, consider the following pages:</P>
<P>
<UL>
<LI>Mobile Home
<LI>Products
<LI>Services
<LI>Blog Feed
<LI>Podcast Feed
<LI>About Us
<LI>Contact Us</LI></UL>
<P></P>
<P><B>3. Setting Up the Subdomain</B></P>
<P>The standard convention for mobile sites is having a subdomain called "m", which is short for mobile. Ask your server administrator to do this for you. I accomplished this in less than three clicks in Plesk.</P>
<P><B>4. Wireframing</B></P>
<P>There are plenty of web kits out there such as iWebKit that will provide the basic framework, requiring you to merely edit the HTML by replacing the dummy text with your own company information.</P>
<P><B>5. Adding Functionality</B></P>
<P>Now that you've got a barebones mobile website up, you can explore other functionality like having a click-to-dial feature by using the tel: hyperlink (works on mobile browsers, but not standard web browsers). Additionally you can integrate with Google Maps making it easy for prospective clients to find your office.</P>
<P><B>6. Alpha Testing</B></P>
<P>After creating the basic structure and adding the content, publish your pages to the web using any FTP program. I found loading "http://m.yourdomain.com" in Apple's Safari a good way to test the mobile app rather than waiting for the pages to reload on my iPhone. Once you're happy with how it looks in the desktop browser, boot up the iPhone, iPod Touch or BlackBerry and see how it looks on those devices.</P>
<P><B>7. Beta Testing</B></P>
<P>When you're confident all the pages load and there are no broken links, ask a few of your friends or colleagues to view the site on their smartphones. If your friends are willing, have them answer a few questions such as:</P>
<P>- What device and network did you access the mobile website on? <BR>- Did the mobile website load? Was it slow or fast? <BR>- What was your first impression? <BR>- Did we articulate the purpose of the mobile site clearly? <BR>- Did you find any broken links or elements that were confusing? <BR>- What features would you like in a future version of the mobile website?</P>
<P><B>8. Answer Your Beta Testers</B></P>
<P>If you've had the privilege of having other people take time out of their day to provide you with feedback, be sure reply to each of their comments, suggestions and recommendations with class. This is valuable feedback and should be acknowledged as such.</P>
<P><B>9. Mobile Sitemap</B></P>
<P>For the mobile version of Voices.com, I've created both a simply HTML sitemap located in the footer of the site, but also a mobile XML sitemap which was then submitted directly to Google using Google Webmaster Tools. Doing this will help Google, as well as other search engines, discover your mobile website a lot faster, and be aware of changes in site structure, updates to content or the addition of new pages.</P>
<P><B>10. Going Live</B></P>
<P>When you're ready, announce your mobile website on your blog, podcast, Facebook Fan page and as a Twitter status update. Take your publicity efforts one step further by writing and distributing a press release.</P>
<P><B>Final Remarks</B></P>
<P>The marketing of your mobile website is definitely an ongoing effort, but now you can move forward in this fast-changing technological landscape with the confidence of having a mobile website and remaining relevant to your most advance customers - and you accomplished all of this in just ten steps.</P></DIV>

How To Play Bridge For Dummies

The Guitar - a Brief History

The guitar is an ancient instrument that can be traced back over 4000 years. The fact that there are many different theories as to its beginning only demonstrates the appeal and uniqueness of this instrument.

The earliest stringed instruments are believed to be the bowl harps and tanburs. Items like these are available for viewing at various museums around the world and highlight instruments from ancient Egypt and Babylon.

The name "guitar" comes from the ancient Sanskrit word for "string" - "tar".
By the beginning of the Renaissance the four-course guitar had become dominant in most of Europe but was replaced by the five-course Italian instrument known as the guitarra battente. The standard tuning, like our modern guitars, had already settled at A, D, G, B, E.

A sixth course of strings (12 strings) was added to the guitarra battente in the 17th century, but it eventually gave way to six single strings - resembling today's instrument. But it wasn't until the 19th century that the guitar of today started to emerge.

Spanish maker Antonio Torres developed an instrument that resembles the modern classical guitar by increasing the size of the body, changing its proportions, and introducing the fan-top bracing pattern. These changes improved the volume and tone of the instrument, and it became the accepted construction standard.

On the heels of the Spanish influence came the appearance of the United States of America as the new purveyor of all things guitar! A group of German immigrants to America introduced guitars with X-braced tops. Then as the twentieth century dawned, so did the use of steel strings to enhance the sound of the instrument and take advantage of the German addition of the X-brace.

During this time the renown Orville Gibson was building archtop guitars and later merged with Lloyd Loar to refine the archtop "jazz" guitar into its now familiar form with f-holes, floating bridge and cello-type tailpiece.

The electric guitar did not come on the scene until the 1920's. At first it was simply Hawaiian guitars with added pickups and was of little importance. That all changed in 1936 when Gibson introduced the ES150 model later made famous by Charlie Christian.

Today we have virtually the same instrument with a few modifications that simply reflect personal tastes and thus appeal to a larger group of consumers.

The Dummies Guide to Buying a Used Car

When entering the used car market the first decision that needs to be taken is what kind of car you need? Depending on your needs you may choose a hatchback, a sedan, a convertible, a mini-van or an SUV. This decision would largely depend on the amount of space you need, the use the car would be put to, etc. After you have chosen the type of used car, you need to determine your budget and shortlist the makes and models you prefer. Keep in mind that the more upmarket the brand the higher will the car's maintenance costs due to more expensive parts and service. So while a used Mercedes may seem like a bargain, keeping it running would be much more expensive than say a used Toyota or a used Honda.

Once you defined your budget and made a selection of the makes and models it's time to decide if you wish to buy the used car from manufacturer's used vehicle department, from an independent used car dealer or directly from the owner. If you pick the first two options, remember that the dealer would typically charge you a premium of 8-12%. The manufacturer owned used car businesses usually sell certified cars which come with a limited warranty and some free services as well. If you don't want to shell out the extra premium dealerships command, you could go through online and local auto classifieds to find the car you want and get in touch directly with the used car seller.

Now that you have shortlisted a few used cars which are on sale, it's time to visit the seller or the dealership and inspect the cars. The key aspects to look at include the car's engine, transmission, suspension, electricals, bodywork and interiors. You should request for a test drive as that would give you a real feel of the used car's condition. While taking the test drive, keep your ears open for any unusual noises coming from the engine, transmission and suspension. See if the used car starts in one go as if takes more than once the car's battery or starter could be damaged. When the car is on, check the tailpipe for signs of excessive smoke as this can point to a tired engine. When on the move, listen if the engine sounds smooth as any unusual sound could lead to future problems.

Note the way the used car steers and goes over speed breakers. If the steering is hard to keep straight and the car is pulling to one side, its suspension or wheels could need immediate attention. Also check the gearshift for smoothness and play. An excessively loose or hard clutch is also a sign of trouble and points to worn out clutch and pressure plates. Listen to the suspension as you go over bumps, it should not make a crude sound and should also not feel too bouncy. Make sure you check the air conditioning, audio system, power windows, central locking and all other equipment during the test drive.

Now that you have inspected the used car's mechanicals and driving characteristics, walk around it and see the bodywork and condition of the tyres. An irregular paint finish is a sign that the used car was involved in an accident and has been repainted. Check the tyres for condition of the tread and make sure they will last for some time. Also check that all lights are in working condition and that the car has a proper spare wheel and all tools in place.

Once you are satisfied with the used car's condition it's time to check that its papers are in order. A valid registration, insurance, pollution control certificate etc are mandatory. You should also ask the seller for service records to see if the used car has been maintained regularly and at a reputed workshop. If everything looks fine, negotiate on the seller's asking price and haggle based on the condition of the car if certain things were found to be worn out etc. Ultimately you should pay no more than your budget and also consider the cost of ownership transfer etc in the final price.
