Computer Networking For Dummies

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]

Computer geeks please help! How can I hide what I've looked at on my work computer?

Like everyone else with a computer at work, I occasionally indulge in a little quality websurfing when I should be working. I'll browse gossip websites, editorials, Google my friends, and a whole lot of other things that have nothing to do with work.

My question is this: Is there any way that I can clean the record of this from my computer and/or from the network and make it hard(er) for anyone to find out that I was surfing the net?

Here are some things that may help you give me advice:

--My computer is networked to 6-8 other computers.
--I already know how to clean out the "History" and make it so that none of my searches, etc are saved.

Any advice would be much appreciated! Please make it "Computer 007 Stuff for Dummies" cuz I don't know much about computers!

Thanks so much.
Adding details:

I use Firefox, usually.

One gentleman suggested "portable firefox"-- what is that?

What OS. Virtual pcs or what?

Scrapbooking For Dummies

scrapbooking for dummies
scrapbooking books?

do you know of any good scrapbooking help books? like scrapbooking for dummies? thanks!

As the other person said, there are lots of free sites with TONS of good ideas... But if you truly want hard copies, I prefer magazines such as Memory Makers, Paper Crafts Magazine, Creating Keepsakes, Scrapbooks Etc, just to name a few. They're cheaper than books, and you can keep up with the latest techniques and products easier than you can with books...

And then there are the basic books: Scrapbooking for Dummies, The Complete Idiots Guide to Scrapbooking, The Ultimate Scrapbooking Book, The Everything Scrapbooking Book, Scrapbooking Made Easy, and many many more...

Since everyone's tastes and scrapbooking criteria are different, my suggestion would be to go your local library and look through the books and magazines they have there. That will get you started anyway. Good Luck! :)

Ebook Creation: How to Select a Great Topic for Your Ebook

It couldn't be easier to select a topic for an ebook. People are hungry for information, and people are looking to the Internet to feed their hunger. After you've read this chapter, you will feel confident enough to choose your own topic, or you can literally pull your ebook topic directly from this ebook and use it! How's that for a deal?

Observe what's going on around you.

If you're smart enough to read this book, you're smart enough to look around you and determine what interests you and those around you. Think of what problems you've recently solved, and what kinds of problems others have had and solved. Any problem that has been solved in your world could easily be the subject of your next book. People love to read how other have solved a problem that they currently have.

So, brainstorm a list of problems in your life and in the lives of those around you. Your friend Bob lost his job? Your sister's child had chicken pox? How did they cope or find solutions? While you're at it, start another list of unsolved problems evident in your corner of the world. Write down problems you wish you had solved. Aha! These are subjects that people will really be interested in! How to lose the last ten pounds. The truth about UFOs. The straightest path to becoming a millionaire. From your personal corner, your step-granddaughter is pregnant at age 14? Your grocery bill is double what it used to be? Your roof leaks? These are problems waiting for ebook solutions!

These unsolved problems would also be great ebook topics. Remember, you don't have to know the solution, just the topic. You're going to get someone else to do the research and write the book for you. You will not actually be writing one word.

Spend a few minutes Googling

The Internet is a great way to find out what people are looking for at any given moment. You can search for almost anything. Google™ is a popular search engine you can use, or you can try any of the others like Yahoo!® or Mamma.com. Type in phrases like "top concerns of Americans," "best-selling nonfiction topics," or "popular how-to manuals." Common worries of 2005.

And while you're on the Internet...

Find out the most popular nonfiction books from the New York Times bestseller list, Amazon, and a Google search for ebooks. Your findings will tell you exactly what book subjects people are buying right now.

Try this. Go to www.amazon.com. From the tabbed menu running along the top of the Amazon home page, click "Top Sellers."

I did this one day in September 2005 and found a Harry Potter book, several other fiction books, and titles such as Natural cures "they" won't tell you about, How what you wear can change your life, How to profit from the demise of the dollar, and The official SAT study guide. I've paraphrased to some degree, but you get the idea.

Here's what I learned just from spending a few minutes on Amazon that day. People are reading good fiction from already-best selling authors (Da Vinci Code, the Harry Potter series, and others). Secondly, Amazon buyers, buying over the Internet, are interested in nonfiction topics such as improving their lives and making more money. For these books, just about any author will do, even virtual unknowns or people who went to prison for lying to the American public.

And that quick visit only confirmed that the straightest route to ebook profits is in the nonfiction ebook market. This is for a number of reasons. Fiction readers tend to like to curl up in a chair with an actual book. Some of them attend book clubs where the physical books are brought around someone's kitchen table with wine and cheese. Fiction readers tend to purchase from authors they're already familiar with. Fiction can be more difficult to write and deliver well. Also, many of the classics in fiction are available as free ebooks. A reader interested in fiction could just download those. So stick with nonfiction unless you're feeling particularly bold and experimental.

Here is some more good news, and if you didn't already know this then you are going to be smiling big. Drum roll please... ideas are not copyrighted, therefore any idea you see, hear, or read anywhere anytime, is yours to use for an ebook! You can create books around the same ideas that are covered in the Amazon best seller list, and turnaround and create an ebook on the exact same subject!

Now, copyright law does protect the way ideas are expressed, so you want to make sure your hired author does not plagiarize or copy book text outright. And you cannot use the title word for word either. But there's nothing stopping you from creating another book or ebook that covers the same subject with a different voice. It's all as completely legal and guilt-free as nonfat Haagen Dazs. This is why looking at bestseller lists is a great way to get topic ideas.

Digging a little deeper

There are groups of people who are willing to buy nonfiction ebooks: hobbyists. At any given time, these people are looking for ways to spend their money on their hobbies. Their passion is your financial gain.

What avid hobbyists want will always make great ebook material. Note that I did not say what hobbyists need. You may have certain opinions on what exactly certain people should need or should read. But those are not necessarily good topics for immediate ebook profit. Those topics may be areas for you to dabble in at your leisure. However, if you want to make money at this, find out what niche groups want, and hit those groups with your ebook.

Find hobbyists and niche groups by searching the web for "popular hobbies," "enthusiasts," or "what America is buying." Or, you can search specifically for forums and discussion groups for hobbyists. In the forums, people talk with each other to share ideas with one another. Often, they will exchange testimonials for equipment, upcoming events, and books.

One popular site where hobbyists go to talk to one another online is Yahoo!. Check it out. Go to www.yahoo.com. Click "groups." On the groups page you'll see a list of categories such as Business & finance, and Religion. For demonstration purposes, click on "Games."

On the games screen, game subcategories are listed followed by numbers. The numbers indicate how many discussion forums are available for that subcategory. These numbers reveal a lot. Notice how "role playing games," and "video & computer games" have factors of ten or in some cases factors of 100 more forums than other subcategories. "Wargaming" and "paintball" don't even come close, although those categories are much more discussion-laden than "horseshoe pitching."

For fun, one day I continued selecting subcategories until I arrived at a list of over a thousand (yes a thousand) discussion groups on Yahoo having to do with vampire role playing. Here's how I got there: Games>>Role Playing Games>>Live Action>> World of Darkness>>Vampire: The Masquerade.

Some of the forums are open to new members, and you can join to read what everyone's discussing. Once in the forum, you can review discussion threads from today, yesterday, or a year ago. Don't go back too far if you want to find out the hottest possible ebook topics. You can participate in discussions if you like. FYI, do not drop into a discussion group just to market an ebook; hobbyists consider this spam and will drop you from the group.

When you read and/or participate, you'll find out what this group is buying. All you have to do is skim to find out what questions they are asking each other about products or traveling or information. What they are interested in buying is a key piece of information because passionate consumers love to research before they buy. This is an immediate ebook market. Create a book on how to select the best this or that on the market, related to the current wants of the enthusiasts.

Enthusiasts come in all shapes and sizes. Think brides-to-be, golfers, whitewater rafters, people who collect vintage baseball cards, wine connoisseurs, gardeners, frequent vacationers, video gamers, and parents who put their children into private tutoring, ballet, and violin lessons before age 3.

There are some hobbies that seem to continually attract enthusiasts, like playing golf, watching football, restoring old cars, and listening to music. These are classics. Then there are some hobbies that seem to come and go in waves, such as Red Hat Societies participation, snow boarding, or line dancing. Pick either a classic hobby or a fluctuating hobby in its peak season for your best odds.

A big market on the Internet is the 20-30 set. Here's what they are doing right now, according to one survey. They're snowboarding, wakeboarding, traveling, camping, listening to music, taking photographs. They're drinking gourmet coffee, rock climbing, playing guitar, camping, dancing, looking for online love, shopping for computers and other electronics, attending sports events, studying the Bible, exercising, trying to find jobs, and watching movies. Any one of these subjects would make a great ebook with a buying market standing by.

How-to's and hot topics

There is almost no limit whatsoever on the marketability of how-to books. Everyone wants an instruction manual, advice, and encouragement that they can do anything they read a how-to book for. Anything you know how to do, anything you've ever wanted to learn, or anything that's teachable at all, can become a how-to ebook.

How-to books for hobbyists are a good way to go, and this overlaps with the discussion above. A hobby how-to ebook could be anything from how to build a home from hay bales to how to play Texas Hold 'Em to how to understand Shakespeare.

One book publisher knows how hungry we are for how-to information, and has created a whole series of "Dummies" books around the market. Further, there are other similar book series', and all of them are doing quite well! "The Everything" series, "Idiot's Guide" series and others are all cashing in on the how-to phenomenon.

You could cash in by creating ebooks on any or all subjects covered in any of those series'. Go to www.dummies.com, and check out their list of titles. Pick one you like, and move full speed ahead!

Remember that even though the books have "Dummies" in the title, that the books are as popular as they are because the readers are not treated like dummies at all. The authors cater to a person who wants to find out the easiest way to do something without too much tangential discussion. When you have your ebook written and when you choose a title, make sure you are appealing to a reader's smarts! If you use words like stupid, dumb, or hopeless in the title, make sure that it is clear that the meaning would not extend to insulting the individual reader.

Ebooks, because of their brevity and because they are marketed primarily on the Internet can target smaller audiences. You don't have to write a universal book like How to use a computer (which may not be interesting enough to sell anyway in this decade). Ebooks can cover more specific territory. Knowing this, you can 1) create your ebook in a specific way for a specific niche readership, and 2) create additional ebooks for different facets of the same subject, and sell each one separately!

Say you've decided to write an ebook on fishing. (FYI, this is one of those hobbies where enthusiasts are willing to spend money!). You could create "How to Catch Freshwater Trout," "How to Tie Your Own Flies," or "How to Plan a Successful Deep Sea Fishing Trip." Almost anything related to the hobby can become a separate ebook depending on how much detail you include. Clearly, "How to put on waders," probably wouldn't be a great choice (though some would say it's impossible to underestimate today's consumer), because you would have to strain to fill up 60 to 100 pages on such a simple topic. You get the idea. The topic would need to be, in most cases, book worthy. Use good judgment.

Then, life itself requires instructions, as we know from "Life's Little Instruction Book." So, life also qualifies as a good how-to book topic. There are numerous subtopics, and you'll never run out of ideas. Here are a few examples:

· "How to ensure your child gets an A+ in math"

· "How to have a successful garage sale"

· "How to organize your home office"

And while we're on the subject of how-to books, I'd like to make one quick point. The titles of these ebooks do not need to be incredibly clever. Be sure the words "How to" are the first part of the title, and the rest should tell exactly what the ebook is about.

For example, which of these three titles would be best?

1. "How to have a successful garage sale."

2. "One weekend away from a cleaner house"

3. "How to sell your old shoes for a profit"

Although numbers 2 and 3 are clever, a little punchy, and correspond with the ebook content, I would still recommend using title number 1. "How to have a successful garage sale" sums it up pretty well and will catch the eye of an Internet surfer who is interested in putting together a garage sale and needs a how-to manual.

Anyway, back to the point. Any phase of life, way of coping with life, or large or small thing about life can be the subject of a how-to book.

Looking young

Perhaps sixteen year old girls don't want to look younger, but from that point on, and for most of the population in Western society, looking young is a common desire. Everybody wants to find the fountain of youth, whether it be in a pill bottle, a special diet, surgery, or an ebook.

An ebook about staying or appearing young in the face of growing old will have a solid future. Here are some title ideas, and I'm sure you can come up with a truckload more.

· "Drop ten years and ten pounds in ten days"

· "How to look 28 forever"

· "100 ways to look younger"

· "Grocery store products that will help you look younger"

· "Look 30 again without surgery"

· "How to live to be 100"

This topic is red hot. Botox, surgery, chemical peels, lasers, diets, acupuncture, electronic pulses, mega vitamins, prescription teas, thigh cream, and teeth whiteners are being purchased by baby boomers, the elderly, and even women as young as 20 ! No one wants to look a day older than they have to.

Health

Health is a concern to anyone who is growing old or ill or faced illness with a loved one or wants more energy or, basically, everybody. Health ebooks are a good investment for you to make. And doctors don't have to be the authors. Anyone with any credentials, or no crendetials at all, can write books on health. Just be sure you don't claim to be a doctor if you're not one.

Here are some health topics you can hit at this moment in time and be almost guaranteed immediate interest, readership, and sales!

Disease prevention and cure.As our baby boomer population ages, most will be afflicted with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, dementia, or some other malady. Give these people some hope. Create an ebook on how to cope, how to find the best practitioners, how to avoid disease triggers, or cures American doctors are unaware of.

Natural remedies. People are curious about alternatives to standard medicine, and are anxious to try herbal, natural, or holistic treatments. Create a book on any disease that covers alternative cures. For example, "How to Treat Lymphoma, Naturally." Or, you could just address natural supplements in general, "The best natural remedies for common ailments," or "Holistic health."

Diet. What we eat is always a hot topic. There are literally dozens if not hundreds of diet fads currently out there. Pick any one of them for an ebook. Then there's obesity, general health, and also diet supplements like vitamins. Think "How to equip your kitchen for macrobiotic dieting." Or, "Eat to cure cancer."

Travel

Never has so much travel been available to so many. People today want to get in touch with the people they love. They want to experience different parts of the world. See exotic things. Be entertained. Also, because, especially in America, adults sometimes work well more than 40 hours a week, people need really good vacations. They're doing their research to make sure that they will really enjoy their precious few weeks off each year.

Here are some topics for you: how to trade frequent flyer miles, how to keep airport security off your back, how to travel on a dime and get change, and how to keep your children happy on long car trips.

Beyond the how-to's, there is plenty of room for books like, the best amusement parks for your money, top 100 campgrounds, things you must see and do in Utah before you die, and free things to do when visiting Washington, D.C.

Get the idea? The good thing about creating travel ebooks is that you may already know a lot about a place that other people may be interested in visiting. Makes it easy!

Money

Money makes the world go around (well that and the earth's axis and planetary forces), and so it would make sense that ebooks would abound on the topic of money. They do, but the market is nowhere near saturated. There's always room for more. From getting rich to just saving money day-to-day, people are always interested in how-to books related to money. Ideas below:

· "How to feed your family on less than $40 a week"

· "How to get free stuff"

· "How to pay almost no taxes"

· "How to buy a retirement home for no money down"

· "How to be richer than your parents"

· "How to buy cars at auction"

· "How to start a financial management business"

Life enrichment

In these days, although fewer and fewer are attending churches, more and more are flocking to purchase self-help books. Self-help books are leaping off shelves at brick and mortar bookstores. People want to feel that if they read a self-help book, they have all the power to change their lives. Whether or not this is true is moot. Changing your life, soul searching, and helping thyself, are all great ebook topics.

As much as ever before, people want to know how to find peace with their pasts, how to be creative or spiritual in a consuming society, and how to find true love. There is no end to how-to books you could create in the category of self-help, or life enrichment. Here are a few more ideas here:

· How to marry for life

· How to unbreak your heart

· How to stay sane in a crazy world

· How to meditate

A few more topics bound to explode

These are fiery hot topics that are sure to be on the rise. You can pull any one of these to use for your first ebook. Then come back and pull another topic for your next ebook.

Using the latest electronics. We are a society obsessed with having the latest and greatest technology. Do an ebook on iPods, email/camera cell phones, wireless Internet, digital TV, or any combination of these items.

Home improvement. There's so much of a craze in this area that do-it-yourself (DIY) stores are on every corner of major cities. If you haven't been to a Home Depot or Lowe's lately, then you are one of the few. Sure, apartment dwellers and young students aren't in this market, but people with homes and money to afford them are in this market. In fact, some cable TV services offer entire channels dedicated to home improvement.

Especially of current interest are in-home automation systems. DIY home improvers are eager to learn about and buy things that will make their home lives more relaxing, high-tech, or fun. Create a book to teach them how to make their lights come on for them before they get home from their jobs, or how to press a button to adjust window blinds, music, or temperature. Or how Bill Gates' house works. Or how to add automation to an existing home, or how to build-in automation when a house is constructed.

Identity theft prevention. Especially because ebooks are marketed on the Internet, this is a great topic. This is because people who purchase over the Internet are concerned that their credit card numbers will not be seen by others or misused in any way. Even away from the computer though, consumers are on-edge about identity theft. Today, people are shredding their receipts, removing their personal information from the face of their checks, and cautiously covering themselves when they type in passwords at public terminals or ATMs. Microchips are being installed on ID cards. People are worried. Tap into this with an ebook!

Safety. Along the same lines as worrying about identity theft, people are worried about their safety from other things like crime, chemical warfare attack, and natural disasters. Watch the evening news tonight, and you will be able to list at least twenty things that people are afraid of. When you talk about safety, you are speaking their language. Titles along the lines of be prepared for any natural disaster would go over well, as would those like never be a crime victim again, how to defend yourself in a parking lot, or prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

How-to manuals for any new product recently on the market. This harks back to the Dummies series but takes it one step further. Target your ebook to people who want to buy the most current commercially available item. How to use the new model John Deere tractor. You will be sure that no one else has a book like yours, and you can say so in your sales pitch.

How to survive any phase of life. People face numerous demons and battles as they live their lives. For many, when they're in need, they'll be reaching out for help. Support groups, private therapy, being with friends, starting over - these are all solid topics for an ebook. You could also reach out specifically to certain people needing emotional assistance. How to get through the terrible two's. How to cope with a cancer diagnosis. Living with your own shortcomings. How to live with someone who is dying. Surviving high school. Any of these will do.

Anything to do with pets. People are pampering their pets more than ever before. Some pets are treated better than people. It's the people who spend small fortunes on their pets that will also be willing to pay good money for an ebook that gives them ideas on how to treat their animals even more royally than they already do.

Write books on how to pamper your parakeet, homemade meals for picky dogs, where the pet spas are, how to train your kids to be cat-friendly, million dollar homes for mutts, which animals make the best pets, or pet psychology.

Traveling mixed with the subjects above. Not only are people traveling like crazy, but they want to customize their itineraries and their methods of travel with their hobbies and lifestyles. Try a few of these on for size: where to dine around the globe and still stay on a low-carb diet plan. Hotels with the best exercise facilities. How to travel exquisitely with large dogs. Crime-proof your campsite. Be creative. There's a market here.

Using the Internet to meet people. As I said, the craze is upon us. Everyone's online, and sometimes folks spend more time chatting with Internet buddies than they do talking face to face with actual friends. I know I've been guilty of this one myself. Anyway, along with the advent of the World Wide Web, came people who need a little help figuring out how to get where they want to get. They want to find like-minded people, find a date, find love, find support.

There's a huge ebook market for hooking people up with people online. Here are just a few things that could be covered: speed dating online, virtual music jams, taking online classes, hooking up with people who share your hobby, and finding online support groups. Any of these and more are of interest to people who wish to get maximum benefit from their ability, thanks to the Internet, to network with people in the farthest reaches of the world. In fact one of the appeals with online communing is that distance does not matter. Help these people in foreign lands find each other with an ebook.

Topics of special interest to women. The facts don't lie. Women dominate the Internet, and they spend or influence spending of 80 cents for every dollar changing hands. What women want has never been so important to business owners and authors.

Certain topics appeal particularly to the female set. These include beauty, health, decorating, emotional support, and life enrichment. Women do a few things, generally, that men don't. They play bunko, wear make-up, and talk for hours to their girlfriends on the phone. They send more greeting cards, prepare more casseroles, and vacuum more often than men. They eat more salads and go shopping more often for clothes. They get more pedicures and love to dance more than the average man.

There are two things to keep in mind with regards to women and ebooks. If you want to attract a female market, you need to write about a topic that women like to read about, and you want to make the title friendly towards women.

Here's a female-oriented subject and title: Where to find great shopping bargains in Taos. And here's a male subject: Where to catch the most fish in Taos.

Here's a female-friendly title (same as above): Where to find great shopping bargains in Taos. And here's a male-friendly title on the same subject: Keep your money in your pocket in Taos. See the difference? Know your market, and if you need to choose between one or the other, you're safe going with the women's title.

Sex. People don't need to sneak out of bookstores with erotic books in their hands anymore, and they know it. They are looking on the Internet for sex materials, toys, and books. The Internet is private, individuals can take their sweet time, and indeed they can surf with or without a lover sharing their chair. There's been a recent ebook success entitled Orgasms for two. There is room for more similar ebooks. On the subject of sex, this is one case where a fiction book may also do the trick. You could create erotic short stories or a how-to-have-great-sex ebook. Either ebook would entice adults interested in this category (and incidentally, most adults are indeed interested in this category).

How does this PayPal verification work?

I'm really lost on how to verify my account I just signed up for on PayPal.
I believe that it is suppose to send a deposit into your bank account to make sure that it was your account, but where can I find out that they have made the deposit?

It's been two business days I suppose, since the last day that I signed up for PayPal.
And they have sent me an e-mail (yes, it had both my first and last name, so it wasn't a fake)
and I don't know where to look or where to find that they have made a deposit.

And if you know, make it short and sweet.
If you could, it would be lovely to give me a guide.
(It's my first time with PayPal, so don't think that I'm an idiot or something.)

Thank you so much for answering, it certainly helps a lot.
:D
I forgot to mention that I'm using Debit.
Is it still the same with Credit ?

PayPal charges something like $2 to your credit card. It will be re-deposited to your credit card shortly after.

Accounts For Dummies

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
accounts for dummies

Sports betting for dummies - Chance of hot football betting

Here's some concept on football sports betting for dummies. All major sportsbooks provide a number of alternative betting approaches. Start to know some of those

Offer gambles - When it comes to sports betting for dummies, proposition gambles are among the first issues to dig. They're particular wagers that are made on precise match results. As as an example, you can guess the total goals the teams score in football matches.

Parlays - And what good is sports betting for dummies without knowing the all exciting 'Parlays'? This is just multiple betting. The amount of gambles goes as high as 12. As for an example, the bettor might include four wagers in a 4-team parlay, this suggests she or he wins just when all the four gambles are won.

This means, if any one among those four gambles loses, the bettor will lose the entire parlay. Likewise, when all the four gambles win, this could get the bettor payouts that are much higher ( sometimes 10-1 for a 4-teamer ) than he might otherwise make if he bet and won those four separately.

There are two or multiple groups / offers that involve extra points added either to underdogs or subtracted to tops.

A teaser gambling permits you to move the line comparatively more radically than the cases of buying points. This goes as much as 14 points sometimes. Like declared before, lots of sports bettors opt to go for Teasers as there are more chances to get the lines to the bettor's favor.

Pleasers - The other name of Pleasers is 'Reverse Teaser'. However, a Pleaser appertains to straight betting joined with one bet, with the expectation of better payoff prospects.

So, where is the basic difference between a Pleaser gambling and a Teaser betting? In the event of Pleaser betting, the particular line you had originally bet against ( for every one of the individual wager ), will be moved against you by 6 points.

'If' gambles - I believe IF gambles are on of the most fascinating issue that actually matters in sports betting for dummies. In truth, the IF gambles are a collection of two straight wagers that are joined together.

However, they are joined on one singe bet by that "if" clause. This is done by placing two straight bets onto one betting ticket.

This means that the second bet would enjoy action only "if" that first bet in the series is successful. So "if" gambles are also handy when you're meaning to go for multiple ( customarily two to 6 ) straight gambles, but you lack enough funding in your betting account to pay for those extra gambles except your 1st bet wins.

Jinxy's Q - What fascinating cricket terminology do you find amusing?

Terminology
One of the most likeable aspects of cricket is the quaint – ok, silly – terms used to describe various aspects of play. For example, the man who stands in close to the batsmen to try and catch him out is called a “silly short leg”. A bowler who concedes no runs for six consecutive balls is said to have “bowled a maiden over”. A bowler with not much talent is called a “pie chucker”. A batsman with similar ability is a “bunny”. The list is endless. The good news is that there is just one cricket term you need to remember and that’s “stumps”. It means the game is over and you can return to your normal life.

Why We Can't Live Without Good Tech Writers

New to tech-writing, or thinking about starting? The key to success is recognising that tech-writers are a necessary evil.

Tech-writers are necessary because someone has to write the user doco. The programmers and managers sure as hell don't want to. This is actually part of the reason that you're evil, too. In my experience, most programmers and managers think that they could write the manuals if they wanted to... they just don't want to. They might not write all "flowery" like the tech-writers, but what they write is correct.

Unfortunately, that's quite often all that's important to programmers and managers.  There is a feeling within the software environment that accuracy = quality. Audience analysis, doco readability, consistency, usability, active and passive voice, commas in a list of three or more items... All of these things are relatively unimportant to everyone but the tech-writer. Oh... and the user.

In a world where accuracy is all important, a lot goes over the head of the dummy. I don't know if it's intellectual snobbery, but programmers and managers seem to think that if they understand it, so should the user. It doesn't matter whether or not they do... they SHOULD! Stupid users! Maybe it's the geek's ultimate revenge...

Your document can be 100% accurate, but if the audience can't read it, you've wasted your time.

So why doesn't anyone acknowledge this? They do! That's the weird part. In theory, everyone agrees with you, it's just in practice that you find yourself out in the cold. I don't know why this happens. Maybe it's because most of these guys have never done tech-writing.

So tech-writers spend too long worrying about unimportant things. And they bother programmers and managers with unimportant things. But they're necessary things. Otherwise why would you be employed. Maybe the absence of simple logic short circuits their brains. Who knows?

What we can get out of this is that there's a feeling that tech-writers waste time, and as a result, they're pretty much at the bottom of the heap in the software world. I think a good analogy is the way some rich see the poor. Dirty little creatures... if only we could do without them...

But there is an up-side. I don't want you thinking it's all bad.

Being at the bottom of the heap has its advantages. You can go unnoticed for years if you want. If you haven't seen the movie, Office Space, you should hire it. There's a little ferrety bloke in that who was "let go" years ago. Problem is, no one ever told him, and because of a glitch in payroll he still got paid. No one ever noticed.

Being a tech-writer's a bit like that.

When I was managing doco teams, my favourite saying was "All we have to do is manage their expectations and our commitments". Because programmers and managers resign themselves to the fact that they don't know what's going on in the doco team, there's sometimes a temptation to slacken off. Don't give in to this temptation!!! If you ever get caught, doing it, it'll be like the boy who cried wolf - they'll never believe your estimates again!

The other risk is that you'll lose your sense of urgency. And that's a big part of what makes a good worker. You should be very strict about managing your commitments. This requires discipline, because sometimes it seems you're the only one that cares, but you have to do it.

One thing you should be aware of though, is that your average tech-writer in software spends only about 50% of his or her time writing. The rest of your time is spent planning, problem solving, fixing your computer, researching, interviewing the programmers, writing work pracs...

I always found it was a good balance, though.

It was when I started managing teams that the bottom really fell out. Then the percentage dropped to about 10-20%. There were times when I'd go months without writing any help at all. That can be very frustrating, especially if you don't particularly like managing.

Now managing tech-writers in software is an interesting thing. As with most technology management positions, you kinda fall into it, because you're the most senior/experienced person in the company. Unfortunately, that doesn't qualify you to be a manager. Software companies are renowned for dumping people into management roles without any real training or support.

I don't really have any advice for you here. If it's gonna happen, it'll happen. Just be aware of it, and know that if you fall into a management role, it's gonna be difficult. (That's not to say that it can't be rewarding though...)

The ironic thing is that the most difficult aspect of it is that your staff are screaming at you to change the system. "The programmers don't answer our questions!" "None of my work has been reviewed for the last 2 months!" "The project manager just told me to forget about quality!"

Unfortunately, the inexperienced tech-writer is often naïve enough to think they can change the system. Once you become a manager, you know you can't. Hold on a minute... Maybe apathy is what qualifies you to be a manager... Hmmmm.

In any case, my advice is not to push too hard. You'll make life hard for your manager, and give yourself a bad reputation. Recognise you're a necessary evil, and work within those constraints.

Tech-writing can be a lot of fun. And don't let anyone tell you it's not creative. Trying to think of a way to describe what goes in the Name field without just saying "Enter the name" is a real mind-boggler!

Dog Grooming For Dummies

Dogs for Dummies, 2nd ed.: A Review

Dogs for Dummies (2nd ed.) / by Gina Spadafori. (Wiley, 2001) Paperback, 380 p. ISBN 9780764552748

This 2nd edition of Dogs for Dummies, Gina Spadafori serves up both an excellent reference work for dog owners and a guidebook for people planning to get their first dog.  She is pet care columnist for Universal Press Syndicate and host of AOL's "Gina Spadafori's Pet Connection."

Many dog books describe characteristics of particular breeds, so Dogs for Dummies contains relatively little breed-specific information. It does contain material about how to select a breed appropriate for the reader's lifestyle and where to pick one out.  For purebred dogs, she shows how to research breeders to weed out both the incompetent and dishonest ones. She warns that too many pet stores come from puppy mills that have little regard for the health, safety, or living conditions of their products.

Since so many dogs eventually wind up in shelters, left there by their owners for various reasons, Spadafori strongly recommends adopting a dog. Some shelters are so overcrowded that animals cannot stay there long before facing euthanasia. Beyond selecting a dog, Dogs for Dummies covers how to introduce a new dog to its new home. Puppies, older adults, or dogs entering a household that already has one or more all require different treatment.
Dogs are pack animals.

Owners must have some understanding of pack behavior in order to train their dogs well and gain their respect as well as their love. Spadafori covers dog psychology thoroughly and also covers what owners need to know about taking care of a dog, including training, feeding, bathing, grooming, socializing the dog to both people and other dogs. She covers veterinarians, all the stuff dogs need (crates, bowls, collars, leashes, brushes, toys, etc.), travel, tricks, and trivia.

Dogs for Dummies serves up all of this information with good humor, clever illustrations, and an excellent index. As much as it contains, it does not pretend to be the only dog book you'll ever need. It devotes a lot of space to other sources for special information needs.

All-Purpose Guru Alert offers high-quality books like this every day. Stop by often.

Help I Need a Dog Training For Dummies Guide

Please excuse the dog training for dummies title I don't mean to offend you, I simply used this because this term is a description we have come to acknowledge and respect as a term to help use solve almost any problem we may have. I take my hat off to the guys who made the ‘For Dummies' series of books.

If you are in need of assistance to train your dog then you have come to the right place. My main goal here is merely to put you in the correct frame of mind before you start to educate your dog. It will be then that you will eventually see how you can train your dog in the most effective way. You, yourself, could end up producing a dog training for dummies DVD.

Initially the thing you must get right in your head about how to train your dog is to go from having this brainwave that your dog can't be trained and they will forever be a issue to own. And start to think about how you will take control of the whole state of affairs and deal with your challenging canine.

You then need to step out of the way you presently treat your dog and give him the ‘aww, isn't he irresistible, he's like a small baby' label. This has been the frequent problem a lot of owners have and more than likely it would answer for why you have so many issues with your dog.

If you don't own up to this now then you won't be able to move in the right direction and take control of your pet.  You won't see this until its directly pointed out to you however must know that what you're actually doing is opening the door for your dog to become the most dominent in your home.

This is the tough part and once you make this shift you will be able to show your dog that he is no longer in charge and he will fall back to his rightful place. Remember this isn't about been inhuman to your dog its about expressing to him he can't behave naughtily and still get your attention.

Don't fret and make sure you keep your head up, keep positive and stop looking at your dog as if he were a child. Start by getting this right first, once you have your dogs obedience and he knows that you're in charge then start to apply the standard obedience training.

Critical Path Mapping

Critical Path Mapping with Activity Network Diagrams

The activity network diagram is a method of displaying the timelines of all the various subtasks that are involved in any project. By doing this, the total task duration and the earliest and latest start and finish times for each task are also calculated and displayed. In addition to showing which subtasks are critical to on-time task completion, the activity network diagram can help determine where extra effort to speed a subtask will have the greatest payoff to overall speed.

The activity network diagram has had a relatively long history, dating back to the 1930s. In the 1950s, the technique emerged as the Program Evaluation Research Technique (PERT) and as the Critical Path Method (CPM). There are several ways to represent the output of the PERT/CPM process.

The method called the activity-on-arrow or, more simply, the arrow diagram will be reviewed in this article. An arrow diagram treats numbered nodes as instantaneous stop/start points for activities. The activities themselves are considered to take place on the arrows connecting the nodes.

What can it do for you?

An activity network diagram can show you which activities or which series of activities is critical to the timing of a more complex collection of interactive activities. This can be very helpful in deciding where and when to apply extra energy to keep projects on time. Creating an activity network diagram is time-consuming, however, so you should consider these questions before you decide to create one:

1. Is the task a complex one with simultaneous paths that must be coordinated? Creating a diagram for a relatively simple task may be a waste of time.

2. Are the durations of the subtasks known with relative certainty? If the actual timing of events is markedly different from diagram times, it will have little value, and people will dismiss the diagram as a useless exercise.

3. Are the task and the timing of the task completion critical to the organization? The effort involved in creating a diagram should be applied to tasks that have little margin for timing error and have either serious consequences if completion of the overall task is delayed or large rewards if completion can be speeded.

Critical path mapping can be especially valuable in project bounding and in the measure and improve phases of the Lean Six Sigma methodology.

How do you do it?

1. Assemble the right team. The team must have either personal knowledge of the timing of all the subtasks involved or connection to that information. The team should include managers and other employees as close to the actual situation as possible.

2. Identify all of the subtasks necessary to complete the overall task. You might use brainstorming techniques or begin with a list of tasks from a previous project. Record the tasks so that you can rearrange them. A good way to do this is to write each job on the top half of a 3x5 card or Post-It™ note. (The bottom half of the card will be used for timing data later in the process.)

3. Put the activity cards in the sequence in which they must be performed to complete the overall task. To do this, create paths or strings of tasks that follow one after the other. These strings will often describe sequences of activities that occur in parallel with each other. After all the activities are in some string or path of activities, create the overall sequence by connecting the paths. These connections will show where jobs or tasks require input from parallel sequences before the next task can begin. Feel free to add new cards for missing tasks or to remove duplicates.

4. Assign time duration to each task or job. Write it on the bottom half of the card. Since you will be adding these times, keep the numbers consistent. For instance, do not have some cards showing days for completion, some showing hours and some showing minutes. Select the Lowest Common Denominator.

5. Calculate the shortest possible time within which the overall task can be completed by adding the times of each subtask to find the path of the longest cumulative duration. This is the critical path. Knowing the critical path is important because this will tell if the time objectives of the project are attainable. The critical path identifies those jobs or tasks that have no slack. Each must be done on time if the project is to stay on schedule. The critical path also identifies targets for improvement to increase speed. (If tasks on the critical path can be speeded, the overall time to complete the project may be able to be shortened. Remember, however, that if a task on the critical path is speeded up, a different path may become the critical path.)

6. Calculate the earliest starting and finishing times and the latest starting and finishing times for each job or subtask in the project. Begin at the start of the diagram. The earliest start time for each job is the cumulative duration of all the previous jobs on that path. The earliest finish time is the earliest start time plus the duration of that task. Repeat this process for each job on each path until you reach the finish point. Next calculate the latest start and finish times. Begin with the earliest finish time at the end of the diagram.

To calculate the slack time for any job or task, subtract the earliest start time from the latest start time. All of the jobs on the critical path, by definition, will have zero slack time. Remember that slack time is dependent on the time of completion of the previous job or task. If some of the slack time in a path other than the critical path is used in an early task, the slack times for the remaining tasks in that path will each be reduced by that amount.)

Note: A dummy is an extra node symbol used to clarify an activity network diagram if one node has more than one job or task feeding into it from one other node. Since the diagram cannot show two activities coming from one node and going to another, a dummy node is created, with zero as the job duration shown on the arrow connecting them.

7. Review the completed activity network diagram with the people who will be doing the work described by it. Consider any feedback. Expand or modify the diagram as necessary to fit the actual situation.

Now what?

As a tool, the activity network diagram is like a time-map of any time-sensitive project. As you are proceeding down the paths of the project, the map will help keep you on track. If you should falter or wander off the path, the map can be used to help get you back on the critical path. This description of the activity network diagram will help you to manually calculate and construct a process map.

Automated tools, such as SigmaFlow, are also available. SigmaFlow produces other valuable scheduling information, as well. Computer scheduling programs like SigmaFlow are able to easily deal with complex processes, recalculating times whenever you modify the data.

A critical path map can help uncover opportunities for increasing speed. Used in this fashion, critical path mapping is another tool to make the Lean Six Sigma method work smoothly. It is important to remember, however, that these diagrams, whether produced manually or by computer, are not intended to drive you, but to signal you if something is wrong.

thanks in advance!

Anything you can get your hands on is good. My list would include:

Advantages of Marketing - My Social Media Campaign – Part 4

My Social Media Campaign – Part 4

Since my trip to The Philippines to visit my team of Outsourcers, things have evolved dramatically. My original Virtual Assistant, Nowen, has left to pursue further studies and has now become a CAD Engineer (I told you that these girls were talented). She has been replaced by Jasmine who is everything that Nowen was.......enthusiastic, hard working and inventive.

Like Nowen, Jasmine has continued to maintain and improve my Facebook and Twitter accounts. She also posts blogs, submits my articles to the best article sites, edits videos and assists with additions to my websites. Jasmine is also a good "sounding board" and has a lot of good ideas. She researches keywords, implements SEO strategies, creates backlinks and does some social bookmarking to keep me up near the top for Google searches.

As mentioned in a previous article, it is great to employ a fulltime VA who works in a team environment as each individual Outsourcer possesses a different set of skills. So if Jasmine gets stuck on a project she can seek help and learn from a co worker. Gee Joy and Dan spend many hours training their workers and building teamwork. During my time in The Philippines I saw this teamwork and camaraderie in action and was very impressed by the "family" atmosphere.

It has now been 5 months since my trip to The Philippines. I still stay in touch with Nowen on Facebook and, hopefully, we will one day meet up again. Who knows, we may even work together again in the future. Nowen and I have become good friends.

Meanwhile, Jasmine and I have also become good friends and we are now beginning to monetise our online presence by offering our expertise in Social Media and Marketing. We now offer professional Facebook and Twitter set up and design for Small Businesses. This can be done for clients all over the world........and, at the right price! Our package can get you going within a couple of days, even if you know nothing about Social Media and don't even have a Facebook account.  And no, you do not need to hire a fulltime VA like I do. VA's can be hired to complete a project whether it is for a day, a month or a year. You choose the work to be done based on your budget.

I've come a long way since November 2010. I am no longer a Social Media Dummy. I am certainly not a Guru, but I do know what this "Social Media thing" is all about. And it is this......Engage with people, provide great information, answer their questions, be truthful and honest, gain their trust. Do all of this for free before you attempt to sell anything to them. After all, it's not called Social Media for nothing.

And, as for Virtual Assistants.......my advice? Try a VA and see what you think. Not all of them are great, but many of them will be a good fit for your business.  What have you got to lose?

Geography For Dummies

Adventure in Coorg

Coorg is a hill station tucked away in the Western Ghats of Karnataka on Kerala outskirts. It has been addressed by different terms owing to its diversity in history, geography and its specialities. Originally it was known as Kodaimalenadu. It is still addressed as Kodagu by its inhabitant. But for tourists and others this place is widely popular as Coorg.  It is also famous as "The Land of Warriors" as the kodavas(residents of coorg) were famous for their bravery.

The orange groves in this place give it yet another name which is "Orange Country". Coorg’s capital Madikeri has been labeled as "The Scotland of India". Coorg because of its varied and diverse geographical condition has something to offer to everyone. It offers adventure sports like golfing, trekking, angling etc. Each adventure sport has been discussed here.

Trekking in Coorg

There is no dearth of trekking routes in Coorg as most of the land area in Coorg is rugged. Several jungles and mountains in Coorg can be good trekking destinations. The Brahmagiri mountain range offers some good trekking routes; trek from Irpu Falls to the Brahmagiri Hill (at 1608 m) is one of them. The best time to do this trek would be in the months of November-December when the Irpu Falls are at their best. Another interesting trail would lead us to Pushpagiri (1712m), which is Kodagu's second highest peak. It can be climbed via the village of Heggademane to the north of Madikeri.

A famous trekking route is through the heart of Nagarhole National Park and Abbi Falls. Another popular setting for trekking near the temples of Bhagamandala is where Cauvery blends with Sujyothi and Kanike rivers. Both these treks offer equally thrills to the travelers. For more trek routes, visitors can choose to trek right up to Tadeyendamol, probably the highest peak in the region.

Rafting in Coorg - Barapole River

Even though the actual length of this run is 4 km, the rapid grades are surprisingly 4-5. Rafters go through a compulsory training session and are first familiarized with rafting equipments. They are also taught paddling and safety rescue techniques. The entire session takes up 3 hours. They even perform dummy rescue mission where each rafter goes overboard and is rescued by his team mates. These sessions make the rafters comfortable with the waters and equipments used. This helps them overcome their fear and instills in them confidence. The exotically names rapids are challenging and worth trying out once you have been trained. The best time to go river rafting here is July to October.

Rafting at Dubare

Famous for an Elephant training camp, Dubare is a jungle on the banks of Cauveri. Dubare is located in between Kushalnagar and Siddapur where the Elephant training Camp is run by the Forest Department of Coorg. Immensely popular for the elephant camp, Dubare also offers rafting opportunities. The river Cauveri offers 1-2 grades of rapids. Rafting is on the River Cauvery as the river is wide and passes through dense forests. Dubare offers two rafting options for rafters; 1) 8.5 km run and 2) 12.0 km run. Even though the rafting grade goes to a maximum of class 1-2 rapids, it is more fun and best for amateurs. You get to enjoy the river, and the rafters can safely float down the river in the life jackets, enjoy the wildlife and relax. Rafting is generally carried out in the months of July, Aug and September.

Angling in Coorg

Cauvery is a boon for anglers and fishing enthusiasts. The Mahseer in Cauvery River lures several anglers from world. However before you go angling you need to consider a few things. You can go fishing only if you have fishing liscenses. The Coorg Wildlife Association, Madikeri, not only provides information on fishing license but also provides guidance for Mahseer fishing.

The fishing license is not issued in the months of monsoons as it is the breeding season for fishes. Even after you have acquired the licenses you have to be mindful of releasing the fishes back into the water after catching them. Also anglers need to keep in mind that they are restricted to a certain number of fishes everyday.

Lastly keep in mind that Angling is an activity that requires a lot of patience. So if you have angling gears and are ready to wait, you know where to go.

Wildlife Sanctuaries

Popular for its lush green settings, Coorg also has rich wildlife. It boasts of three wildlife sanctuaries and a national park. They are Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, and Nagarahole or Rajiv Gandhi National Park. Out of these, Pushpagiri is situated in the northern part of Coorg and is known as one of the important bird areas in the world.

Nagarhole National park gets its name after combining two Kannada words; 'Nagar,' which means snake and 'hole,' which means streams. This park is famous for its large elephant and bison number and mind boggling 250 species of birds.

Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the Western Ghats. It has been named after Talakaveri which happens to be the origin of Cauveri River.  The best times to visit this sanctuary are from November to March.

Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across in approximately 181 sq km of region. Due to pleasant weather, nature camps are possible in the region. Surrounded by lush green and shola grasslands the best time to visit the sanctuary is from October to May.

Mixed Emotions on Smoking Ban

You might be a hardcore smoker, or you would be someone who hates cigarettes. Regardless of this fact, the government has decided to outlaw smoking inside bars, restaurants and cafes across the United States. The ban on smoking seems to have struck a nerve in many a people. As with any issue, quite a few controversies envelop the ban as well as the very act of smoking in general. Every person has got his own opinion whether the move towards a ban on smoking was right. Speaking about non-smokers, almost all people belonging to this category are in favour of the ban, and entreat the government to impose it in more places including parks and stadiums so that the young ones of smokers need not have to suffer the bad effects of smoking.

The smokers though feel that the ruling is prejudiced against them. There are people who raise argument that the negative aspects of smoking have no solid foundation. But very few people support this stance as every day lots of information is getting published regarding the ill effects of smoking. The category of business persons who had to enforce the ban in their offices, factories restaurants and places of work exhibit mixed feelings about the recent ban. Some say that there has been no significant change in the number of customers or clients while some others are furious that their businesses have been receiving setbacks like a steep fall in sales and, thereby the profit.

People who have got some political leanings and some smokers and non-smokers argue that they see the ban as an infringement on their freedom. If one takes a broad look, one will see that all these categories have got some legitimate points to argue. Without a doubt there are obvious benefits to go with the smoking ban – one being the improvement of one’s health. If one takes a closer look one can see some good things that happen to be the results produced by the ban. An absolutely remarkable fact is that there has been a steep drop in the occurrence of heart attack in people. The disease is associated with and is attributed to cigarette smoking. The chemicals contained in the smoke lead to the narrowing of the veins and arteries thereby putting burden on the heart functions.

A survey done at a famous the university in California reported that just a year after the implementation of the ban, the rate of heart attack rates reported a 19 percent dip than was expected. Working in a smoke filled environment for longer periods can cut short one’s life expectancy by upto12 years. The reason given is that the same risks that are part and parcel of smoking apply also to second hand smoking. Working a normal shift in a smoke filled environment is similar to a person engaging in smoking without being interrupted during these hours. So, from now on, bartenders and waiters can look forward to enjoying a healthier lifestyle with the reduced risk of developing different types of cancer, stroke and heart attacks.

Idiots Guide To Statistics

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]

What is a good basic Intro To Statistics book, and workbook?

I find the Complete Idiot guide to statistics hard, and the utterly confused is also hard for someone who needs the basics in a language a beghinner not so good in Math can relate too.

Try Elementary Statistics by Robert R. Johnson, Patricia Kuby

I got this book from a used book shop because I'm a social science/humanities person, not too into math, and my statistics teacher at the university was really incompetent .

It is supposed to be a class text but I started doing it on my own and found it very well explained, and it carries you to the more complicated formulas very well. It has the answers to the odd exercises in the back, so you can check yourself. It also has many many exercises so you don't need an additional workbook.

Sometimes the idiot guides skip through a lot of important things because they want to make the books simple. They might have left out too much.

Others you might try are
Statistics: A Tool for Social Research (Hardcover)
by Joseph F. Healey

and

Statistics: The Exploration and Analysis of Data (with CD-ROM, InfoTrac, and Internet Companion) (Hardcover)
by Jay L. Devore, Roxy Peck

How Does Data Recovery Work?

"You mean to tell me just because I deleted it, that don't mean it's gone?"

Ever accidentally deleted something really important from your computer's hard drive, such as a school report paper or some sort of work document that you worked really hard on? What if I told you you could have easily retrieved that file because it was never really deleted, but rather just hiding from you? I bet it would really boil your noggin at first, especially if you had to recreate your entire English Lit. essay from scratch at 4:30 in the morning like some sort of dummy. Hey, we've all been there. But that doesn't mean we have to put up with it again. So how does data recovery work exactly? Settle in and I'll explain to you the quick and dirty way to recover lost, deleted or corrupted files through the process known as data recovery.

The reason data recovery works is based on the way computers store information. Microsoft Windows operating systems use something called a file allocation table (FAT for short) to map out exactly what files are on your hard drives and exactly where each file is located on the hard drives. But the actual files are stored seperate from the maps that detail where each file is located on your hard drives.

One way to look at it is that the FAT is sort of like a book's table of contents, and the actual files on your hard drives are like the pages that make up the book. So pretend you're holding in your hands your favorite (or least favorite) book, and picture yourself flipping to the table of contents. Now imagine yourself violently tearing the table of contents out of the book, soaking it with gasoline and lighting it on fire. After you've safely extinguished the flames and placed the ashes in a proper waste recepticle, picture yourself picking up the book again. Did you destroy the table of contents in any way, shape or form affect the pages and chapters of the book? Can you still read the book just fine without the table of contents? The obvious answer is yes, the book reads just fine with or without the table of contents, but it would take a lot more time for you to find your favorite chapter. It's the same thing with your hard drive, and often it's just the FAT (the table of contents) that is troublesome, not the actual files on your computer. If the file still exists on your hard drive, it can be recovered assuming it is not damaged and it is not encrypted.

The FAT for every file and folder on each of your hard drives is stored in a portion at the beginning of your hard drives. Windows uses this collection of information to form your system's directory tree structure. When you erase the FAT, the operating system won't be able to find the file, and it will report to you that the file is missing or deleted. But this is where data recovery steps in! But how does data recovery work?

Data recovery functions to reassemble your operating system's file system so your files can be accessed again. The file system is the way your operating system indexes and "remembers" where all your files are located. But if you've lost some data you will quickly realize that file systems can really be a pain in the rear, and navigating them can be quite like a maze.

There exist many recovery engineers who have been trained in the art of data recovery. These brave souls will endure and dominate even the most confusing of data trees and screwed up file systems, so you don't have to. There also exist many software companies that will sell you all sorts of DIY automatic fix programs, claiming it can automatically and easily diagnose and fix any lost data problems on your hard drive. But hiring a trained professional is your best bet, especially when it comes to very important or sensitive materials. A lot of data recovery actually involves physically repairing the disks by hand to properly and completely recover lost data. This is something automatic fix software just can't do.
