Blending Soft Style Wing Chun with Hard Style Martial Arts

I am one of those martial artists who have broken away from my traditional routes and have created my own system. It is not an easy road and there are many people who resent this breaking of tradition. But my love for the martial arts, and my drive to seek truth and find the most effective techniques available wouldn't let me completely absorb myself into any one art. I have taken much criticism, much of which stems from jealousy, but the results my students have seen, and after surviving for more then 30 years in the martial arts industry; I know I am on the right path.

My system includes my unique method of Wing Chun training. While I have used my creativity to expand on the Wing Chun system, I have great respect for the traditional roots of any martial art that I have studied and great reverence for the men I learned from.

In my early years of study and training I learned from several instructors after I spent many years with my Goju Ryu master, Tamojoshi Sakamoto. My reason for doing this was to become a well-rounded martial artist. That is why I studied with others at least to the point of brown belt to get a basic understanding of the differences. I did however; absorb myself in the study of Wing Chun, learning the entire system from Moyat, a master based in Chinatown, New York City, by taking private lessons with him.

I studied Wing Chun because I wanted to learn a martial art from Southern China and to balance my history of training in "hard" styles with a "soft" one. I was also looking to work internally and expand on the philosophy taught to me by Tamojoshi Sakamoto, my Goju Ryu master. I remember having dinner many times with him in the evening and writing down every thing he said. He taught me two great lessons. One is that the enemy lies within; in the obstacles I placed between success and myself. The second was Narano-kan-nin, Surga-kan-nin. This means that forgiving the unforgivable releases the burden of carrying anger and hatred. Studying a "soft" style helped me integrate these lessons on a physical, mental, and spiritual level.

When I left Moyat's school in 1980, I did so on very good terms. I began teaching Wing Chun with Moyat's blessing, because I wouldn't do it any other way. In 1987, Moyat came to my school in Norwalk and conducted a seminar in Wing Chun. He did this out of respect for me, as well as to help my school deal with another Wing Chun school that was creating problems. The instructor at this school gave himself the title of "Grandmaster", claiming that he too studied under Moyat, which was not the case. Moyat also came to Norwalk out of respect for our student/teacher relationship.

When I was training with Moyat, he was having some trouble with people coming to the school to challenge his students. The students taking the group classes could not handle the problem because at the time, he reserved certain training methods, like wooden dummy, only for his private students. I had been in so many confrontations like this in the Dominican Republic that this was old news to me. I fought any of the guys who came to his school looking to cause trouble and eventually put a stop to the problem without anyone getting seriously hurt.

My method of Wing Chun training is integrated into my system, so that my students have a well-rounded approach, not only to Wing Chun, but also to self-defense. This integration was never meant to disrespect or criticize my Wing Chun teacher or any other Wing Chun instructor. It is my way of expanding this traditional style to supplement its softness with the hardness of other styles, to create a well-rounded martial artist. It is an approach that many have benefited from and enjoyed over the years.

One thing you need to think about though is, will your project conform to the local building codes? Usually the plan designers have already thought about this.

There are lots of things you will need to think over before starting your shed. Such things as; types of foundations, location, electrical connections (if required), types of finish and maintenance will need to be considered before you start. If this is your first time building a project of this size you will need to familiarize yourself with some new things. You need a plan and you need it before you even think about starting.

Once I found out, in the Shed Building for Dummies book, that I would need a good set of plans I finished my shed completely in only a few weeks of working in my spare time. What is the best digital camrecorder?

I want to get my husband a cam recorder for Christmas. I know zilch about them. He is an electronics dummy so it has to be very user friendly. He won't be making documentaries, just filming family and friends.

So you are thinking of getting a website and you are wondering where to start.

A website (or "site") is just a collection of pages ("web pages") in a folder ("domain"), with a label on the folder ("domain name"). Domain names are sold for a year at a time. It is really no different than a few sheets of paper in a paper file folder. In that context the cover sheet in the folder is the "Home page" of the website, i.e. the first page of the website that you see when you reach the website.

Most pages on a website are "static" which means that they always show the same information, as opposed to "dynamic" which means the information on them can change quickly.

If you look at a paper brochure, the equivalent to this in website terms is a "brochure" website, and it is static. If you were at an airport and you were looking at the flight arrival screen you would see that the information changes every few minutes. In website terms a website which has information like that which changes every few minutes, or based on a selection you make on the site, which results in new lists of data (usually from a database connected to the website) is called a "dynamic" page.

So enough of terms. You want a website. If you want a simple website with a few pages of text and some pictures, you can quickly and easily build such a website yourself using an online website builder, such as WRSBuilder. The file index for the "file folders" in these "filing cabinets" is the "world wide web", in short "www". Once you defined your budget and made a selection of the makes and models it's time to decide if you wish to buy the used bike from manufacturer's used vehicle department, from an independent used bike dealer or directly from the owner. If you pick the first two options, remember that the dealer would typically charge you a premium of 8-12%. The manufacturer owned used bike businesses usually sell certified bikes which come with a limited warranty and some free services as well. Also check that all lights are in working condition and that the bike has all tools in place.

 

Once you are satisfied with the used bike's condition it's time to check that its papers are in order. A valid registration, insurance, pollution control certificate etc are mandatory. You should also ask the seller for service records to see if the used bike has been maintained regularly and at a reputed workshop. If everything looks fine, negotiate on the seller's asking price and haggle based on the condition of the bike if certain things were found to be worn out etc. Ultimately you should pay no more than your budget and also consider the cost of ownership transfer etc in the final price.

Since I’ve moved back home to live in my parents’ basement, I go with my folks to church pretty much every morning.  They go to a Catholic church, which they’ve belonged to for some 30 years, and since they’ve both retired, they attend morning mass every day.  My dad plays golf on Tuesdays, so I took my mom today and afterwards, as I was waiting for my mom, some little lady asked me why I didn’t take communion during the service.  Good question.

 I am not Catholic.  Haven’t been since I joined a Pentecostal Church in 1982 during my second tour in the Air Force while stationed in England.  I knew what communion means to Catholics and since I no longer believed THAT same way, I felt it was important to respect their beliefs and not to be flippant with a sacred part of their religion.  I remember before Jody and I were married in 1990, she came home with me to visit the folks and we went to church with them.  She was also Pentecostal, raised in a pastor’s home and had been in that church all of her life.  She took communion that morning.  I don’t think she understood the difference in the two beliefs that dominate our two churches in regards to communion. I explained the difference in our beliefs about this and she, to her credit, respected my parents' religious traditions and never did that again.   

 Before we got married, we attended a weekend called Engaged Encounter, which is an offshoot of Marriage Encounter.  On the discussion panel, they had a priest, a recently married couple and a couple that had been married many years as presenters.  When it came to a discussion about church, and a church service that they were going to have the following Sunday morning, the priest spoke about the meaning of communion.  The basic gist of what he said was that to be in communion was to be in agreement.  And how can you take part in a sacrament of the church if you don’t agree about its meaning? 

 Protestants and Catholics believe two completely different things about communion.   This is not a minor “shades of gray” difference, but a major fracture that separates us to quite a distance.  Now we no longer call each other heretics and want to burn each other at the stake, but the same differences that caused those disputes are still alive and well in the world today.   Part of our humanity wants everyone else to see things the way we do.  This is normal, and we don’t really need to apologize for it.  But our civility allows others to see things differently and respects those differences.  It’s part of being an adult.

 The major difference in the beliefs of the two camps is while Catholics believe that the bread and wine becomes the actual body and blood of Christ, Protestants believe it is simply a remembrance of Christ’s coming death and resurrection; His body broken and His blood spilled out for our salvation.  In fact, the Catholic mass cannot actually be complete without partaking in communion.  Minor difference?  I don’t think so.  Wars have been fought over this “minor difference”. 

 As a Non-Catholic, I can enjoy the mass without partaking in communion.  There is enough of what I need to fill the spiritual void that I can enjoy it without disrespecting my family and my family’s heritage.  Also, I am there as support for my parents and my experience is not diminished by not partaking of communion.  The celebration of Christ’s memory and splendor is not diminished by the lack of taking communion.  It brings a sense of God’s presence in my life by participating in all the mass even without communion.  I am also reminded of where I began this Christian journey almost 50 years ago.  And right now, this is enough.
