Can I switch back to Windows from Linux?

After I learnt that I cant run .exe files on a portable hard-drive, this is pretty much a ditch out attempt on Linux. Can't use Wine unless someone makes an idiot proof guide for me.

This may sound completely obviouse but exe files are windows file and the best way to run a windows file is in windows. For some reason silly people want to say they are using linux but are really spending there whole time trying to make every app form windows work in wine. If you want to try linux then cut yourself off from windows and see what linux has to offere. If you want to use a window program then boot up windows and use it. Wine is a terrible program and not only works poorly but keep people from actually really giving linux a propper try.

I recomment for Windows people that want to learn about linux to just try the liveCD and get comfortable.

If they are more serouse about linux I recommend then dual boot windows and linux so they can get used to linux but still have a fall back if it's needed.

I have run linux for years now and have never needed any program from windows in it. So if you remove the wine options from your mind they you can move to finding the proper linux application that you should be using.

But the dual boot is good because sometimes there is just a time you may need a windows app and the best way to use a windows app is in windows. I even do it to play games some times. Not that I don't enjoy the linux games but I still have windows ones to.

Sewing Patterns For Dummies

Looking for patterns for quilts for beginners.?

I do not sew very well, but I would love to try to make a quilt or table runner etc. The instructions almost should be for dummies....I never did learn to sew well. I do have a machine, but reading the patterns is hard sometimes. I do a lot of crocheting, cross stitch and basket weaving. So I am capable, I just never really learned to sew.

Solicitors letter from John Wiley?

Some time ago I bought an ebook on ebay (Windows XP for dummies) and was told I had the right to re-sell it - which I did for 99p.

But this morning I recieved a letter from America informing me that John Wiley (who they say own the copyright on the ebook) want me to refund them the 99p that I was paid and they are also demanding £50 from me?

Are they for real? There is no way I'm paying them £50. Has anyone else ever had any experiences like this?

They told me that I'm forbidden to tell anybody about their demand for 'settlement' so of course I intend to scan their letter and post it all over the internet!
Thanks for the advice. Well strangely enough 11 River Street is the address that I've been given but the letter is worded so aggressively and I feel a bit intimidated by it. I'm not sure if I should respond to them or not. I've never been bullied by a big corporation before and I can't say I like it much!

Choosing Baby Blankets

When you're expecting, there are so many things to think about, what colour you're going to decorate the nursery, which spectacular buggy or travel system you're going to purchase and how many nappies of which size are you going to need. Most people are bought these kinds of items by friends and family as gift, so you tend not to think about them.

Baby blankets are very important accessories to have for your new born. They can be used in a number of ways, from wrapping them up when you're out and about, using as a cover to keep them warm whilst sleeping or just even laying them on, a soft blanket so they can have a stretch.

They come in many fabrics, from cotton to cashmere and you can even get them embroidered. The best fabrics are the ones that are soft and not abrasive to the skin. Some fabrics are not advisable on newborns so make sure you do some research before you buy or ask a member of staff in a shop to advise you. It is also good to get advice on the thickness of the blanket, as some types can be quite warm and you must be aware of this, as not to overheat your baby.

You can get a colour that will match your buggy or nursery, or just go for a neutral colour, like cream, baby pink or baby blue. When washing your blanket, be sure to follow the washing instructions and obey the temperatures, so as not to shrink your blanket or loose the softness. Baby blankets tend to be reasonably priced but it's best to research before you buy, to get the best price.

There are many companies that also sell an item called a comfort blanket. These tend to be a bear or doll, dressed in a silky or soft fabric. They are designed for your child to cuddle up to when sleepy and make them feel relaxed and comforted. These can be a great replacement to deter your little one from sucking their thumb or needing a dummy.

The size of baby blankets is a very important factor, you need to consider if you will be using it in a Moses basket, standard cot or cot bed. Square shapes aren't very good for swaddling, so the best option is to go for a rectangular shape.

You can buy baby blankets from most baby online stores, as well as high street retailers. However if you're feeling very creative, you can even knit or crochet your own or have someone do it for you. To crochet a baby blanket, all you need is a hook, yarn, a needle and colour yarn. Once you get the hang of it, you will have the blanket finished in no time. Then all your baby friends will be so jealous and want you to make one for them too.

dummy finance on a motorcycle help?

Bat Rolling For Dummies

          Composite bats are made of many layers of fiber, resin, and glue.  When a bat comes from the factory the resin and glue between the fibers are stiff and less pliable.  As a bat is hit by a baseball or softball the resin and glue begin to break, this is what players would call “breaking in”, literally.  As the resin and glue breaks up the bat becomes more flexible in that spot.  The same thing is accomplished through bat rolling, a bat is compressed through nylon or hard rubbers rollers and the resin breaks up leaving the area more flexible.  Now when we do that around the circumference of the bat 8-12 times the bat becomes much more flexible.  This flexibility equates to an increase in batted ball speed and farther distance of hit baseballs or softballs.  Studies have been done and found that some bats after being rolled jump up as much as 5mph in batted ball speeds.  You can figure about 8 feet per mph of batted ball speed. 

            Now, wait a minute isn’t perpendicular bat rolling sufficient?  Sufficient is a good word because the answer is yes, but if you want the resin broken up completely you would have to make about 8-12 more passes through perpendicularly hoping you roll the bat through the correct spots.  After the bat is rolled perpendicularly, an assured way to break in the rest of the bat would be to roll it through a parallel bat rolling machine.  This breaks up the resin that the perpendicular bat rolling missed, for a more consistent and flexible bat.  The parallel rollers can not be too long, although, because there will not be a consistent and even pressure over the length of the rollers.  The rollers really need to be a maximum of a foot in length; this would cover any sweet spot on any bat. 

             It would seem like breaking up the resin would decrease the longevity of a bat.  To an extent this statement is correct so you could spend about 24 hours of batting practice breaking in every spot on your bat, hoping you did not miss a spot or get the bat rolled.  In the first case you would have about an extra 24 hours of bat life as long as you didn’t hit the bat in the exact same spot 10 times therefore decreasing its life.  If you had trouble following that I will explain: bat rolling breaks in the entire bat with one swoop.   Breaking in a bat in by hitting balls endlessly causes an inconsistent break in and heightens the chances of breaking the bat sooner. 

             Now the bat still has a strong interwoven mesh of carbon fibers throughout the entire bat which is very strong, this is what makes it possible to stay durable and flex when the brittle resin is broken up.

             So let’s go over this; bat rolling increases batted ball speed and has a longer life than a bat broken in the same amount through normal hitting.  Sounds good to me but some sanctions of softball have considered this an illegal modification.  Bat rolling, when done correctly, can not be detected: so what the sanctions do not know won’t hurt them.

music theory question: intervals and half steps?

i was reading my music theory book, and in the section that talks about intervals, it says that when you are counting half steps, seven half steps above middle C is A... i looked at a diagram of a piano keyboard, and i don't see how this can be. i understand what a step itself is, and i have reread the excerpt to make sure i posted this correctly. it's in the "complete idiots guide to music theory" haha.... also, is the interval between E and F a whole step, or a half step as well? i think it's a whole step, but then that just further confused me when the book said that there are seven half steps above middle C to get A...

Preparation for Rock Climbing?

I am looking to start rock climbing by taking some beginners lessons at Red Point Climbing Centre in Birmingham.

But I want to get myself prepared for the lessons so I can get the best out of them and can excel well?

I know the course is going to teach me a lot, but I feel that I should swot up mentally and prepare myself physically before going.

I am aware that being physically fit will play a great role and I am working on my level of general fitness in line with this. But what kind of exercises could I do at home and out and about (as I don't have access to a gym) to ensure I am in the best condition for it?

Also, are there certain things I should research, read or investigate before going? I have a very basic knowledge of Rock Climbing and would like to know more. If anyone can suggest a good place to start with study I'd be really appreciative! (If all else fails, I'm sure there is a "Rock Climbing for Dummies" out there somewhere XD)

When climbing, you'll use much more leg strength than upper body strength to actually ascend the wall, but that being said, grip and upper body strength are still key. The best tool that any rock climber can get for training at home is a hangboard.
A hangboard is a wide multi-hold that can usually be mounted over any door and has all different sizes and depths and types of holds to practice doing pull-ups on and dead hangs, just to work your hand strength.

Sure, books are going to be helpful in the sense that acquiring more knowledge about any activity can only help you, but really, your grip will be ONE of the main things that will push you from doing 5.8's and under to 5.9's and above. Not to mention that all the "technique" in the books is really what you'll be paying for lessons to learn. It's no quick process and the longer you do it, the better you'll get and the more fun it'll be.

I'd just do a search for rock climbing terms online and make sure you familiarize yourself with some of the most common terminology used in rock climbing like:
-belay
-caribeaner
-atc
-grigri
-take
-scend
-crimp
-sloper
-pinch
-flagging
-smear
-stemming
-...stuff like that.

If you get a better hand on all the terminology then you can optimize your communication with the instructor and will, therefore, get more time with him because he won't have to take time to explain all of these things you could already know.

okay guys, heres the deal. Im a sports nut, sports of any kind i love. I am from Kentucky,and never played soccer,nor watched a full game in my life. sure im not a complete dummy,i know "no hands", offsides, and yello n red cards rules..i got that, but mannnnn,lol. I bought Fifa 10 for 360, and even took it slow today,playing against the cpu a lot, trying to improve and most importantly LEARN the game a tad. I can hang with the cpu, win some n lose some ya know, but I just need some help understanding rosters,positions,and the whole transfer situation. In American, I understand trades,free agents, salary caps...etc,but some of this stuff seems different. Im sure its very much alike just worded different. alright so you ask what position there are ok so there's a GK=goal keeper
then you will notice sumthing called a CB=center back center backs are the heart of your defense so make sure you have high ranked one's (I.E. William Gallas, Nemaja Vidic, John Terry, you should be able to find the rest) then there are also 2 others in the back that are LB and RB they are your left back and right back that cover your back on the wings on defense. If your playing on say the left wing sometimes if your player thats playing on the wings can't make a run the LB will make a run and you can set him up to keep the play going mind you its risky but sumtimes it pays off. Ok now midfield the key to everything there is various positions here there is CAM=Central Attacking Midfielder, CM=Central Midfielder, LM and RM=Right and Left Midfielder (there is also RWM and LWM which is just for left wing midfield and right wing midfield but you can place them in LM or RM position's respecitively) and finallly there is a CDM=Central Defensive midfielder really its up to you how you place your players the traditionally style is to have to CM and one RM and LM and we then go to your forwards they play key in scoring goals so there LS RS CF and ST=Left striker, Right Striker, Center Forward, and striker. all the strikers are important and you have to look at the finishing stat so you can see how accurate there shots are. as for Roster i can tell you it is better to have a mix of young and old players and now i will give you info on formations.
The best formation you ask? there is none they all have weaknesses and strengths personally i use 4-4-2 which balances everything out and is best for sumone like you. as far as the transfer window goes there is a period in the month where u can buy new players to come to your club and play so say its the january transfer window so you open up your transfer stuff and u search for whoever you want to buy ( i suggest you scout before hand who you want to buy i suggest young players like villalba and edin hazard for you cause the other guys are expensive unless you get them early in the game) so what you do is you give a transfer fee this is where you spend your money so say your buying david villa from valencia whatever his cost is you have to pay a lil more then that (ex. if he's 20 mil then you have to pay like atleast 2 mil more then that for villa) and then you have to actually set up the amount your gonna pay the player i believe david villa asks for like 89 grand per game so you have to give him a lil more then that say like 94 but keep in mind to always watch your finaces wen ur doing this don't go for the best players like i always say you can stay young and win the future or die with all the old legs on the field thats pretty much it i hope it helped bud and good luck :)

How to train my dog to sit, stay and lay? TEN POINTS!?

I have two dogs, both yorkshire terriers. One of my dogs is named banjo, and he is eight years old. The other dog is Blazer, almost two years old. Banjo knows how to sit, stay and lay. I would LOVE to see blazer learn to do these too.

I don't want to hire a trainer because my mom doesn't want to. I have a clicker, which when Blazer sits or stays by command i click and give him a treat as I read to do in "Dog Tricks for Dummies"

It doesn't say much about teaching your dog to sit or stay or lay. My dog will sit only when you continue to step towards him and back him up into something. Blazer really doesn't pick anything up from Banjo, so its not much use.

I have tried placing his butt down with my hand but he doesn't seem to catch on. He will SOMETIMES let me pick him up, but for some reason he doesn't like to stay. He won't lay unless he gets tired or he is playing. Any ideas?

To have him sit, try using a treat. Move the treat towards his nose and over his head (so that he'd have to sit to follow your motions. If you need to, use the free hand to guide his butt into sitting (sometimes dogs will just back up to keep track of the treat. When you command him to stay-stand tall, put your hand out (like a stop sign) and use an authoritative, low-pitched voice. (if your voice is high-pitched, you will sound either excited or nervous to the dog) Back away from the dog, with your hand still out, increasing the distance gradually each time. Each time he moves, even if an inch, stop him dead in his tracks with a verbal reprimand.

To lay down, you may also use a treat. When he sits, lower the treat to the floor while keeping it in your hand. Don't forget to say the command.

Be consistent in your orders. Pick a word for a command and stick to it. Don't ask your dog to do something, tell him what to do. You are the leader in this situation. Don't repeat commands, sounding desperate. Reward only when desired behavior is achieved.

UBUNTU? for dummies?

Visited PCWORLD(UK) and was going to buy an UBUNTU linux how to book but was dissuaded by the tech guy who told me you need to be very computer literate with some understanding of programming to install and keep things running smoothly. - is it he right

That may have been true many years ago. Ubuntu has come a long way since then.........I was up and running in 15 minutes and it was a dual boot with Vista...pretty impressive.

Run the LiveCD and if it all works on the liveCD, you should have no difficulty running as an installed OS.....as for the Dummies book, you can if you want but you will find that just running the OS will teach you more than you think.

So, it would be no different than going from Windows XP to Windows Vista.....it is the same learning curve.

Books on GAUSS program?

I am looking for an easy guide book for using the GAUSS program. I am thinking something along the lines of

'the complete idiots guide to GAUSS' (unfortunately it doesn't exist)

Is there a smart phd student out there, who's studying Statistics or Economics who knows a good reference book for GAUSS?

My recommendation would be start with the manual. There are two parts to it. One part just describes the functions that are available, and how to write proper code syntax. The second, however, gives you examples of Gauss code that you can use to learn the bigger picture.

On a another note, why learn Gauss? You might also consider MatLab, which has become my favorite language.

In ActionScript 3, in plain English, what does "extends" mean when building a custom class?

For example, you're building a custom class in AS3, in which you might see something like...

To catch some cod, you can fish the bottom with cut bait or clams in the deep water by shipwrecks during the colder weather. To catch a kingfish, you can use crabs, shrimp, squid or bloodworms on the bottom of the water by the coastal bays. The Delaware Bay is full of croakers that are waiting for some squid, clam or shrimp to feed on.

Mackerel is something New Jersey is known for. There are two kinds of mackerel called the common mackerel and the tinker mackerel. You can catch the mackerel with jigging lures with chum. The mackerel is more often used as bait for other popular fish.
