Stem Cells For Dummies

Use of some cells for diabetes

Diabetes is a syndrome characterized by disordered metabolism and inappropriately high blood sugar resulting from either low levels of the hormone insulin or from abnormal resistance to insulin's effects coupled with inadequate levels of insulin secretion to compensate. The symptoms usually are excessive urine production, excessive thirst and increased fluid intake, and blurred vision; these symptoms are likely absent if the blood sugar is only mildly elevated.

The current best medical practice for those with type 1 diabetes includes insulin by multiple daily injections or continuous pump infusion. Recently developed insulin analogues have helped to more closely approximate normal glucose homeostasis and have been especially beneficial in reducing hypoglycaemia while tightly controlling blood glucose. Glargine insulin provides nearly 24 hours of low level basal insulin activity, while mealtime peaks in activity can be mimicked by administration of rapid acting insulin analogues such as lispro and aspart insulins. Delivery of insulin by continuous infusion pump allows even finer tuning of insulin activity.
Although current insulin delivery modalities are quite good and improving, limitations still exist. Frequent self-monitoring of blood glucose is still required, as is estimation of insulin doses based on multiple factors that might affect future glycaemic changes.

Stem cells offer a potential solution to the opposed requirements of cell proliferation and function. In theory, these cells can proliferate in an undifferentiated state and then be converted to take on required metabolic functions through genetic and epigenetic manipulations. Stem cells have been isolated from embryonic tissues as well as a variety of fetal and adult sources, including umbilical cord blood, bone marrow, central nervous system, liver and pancreas. One potential advantage of adult stem cells is that they could be used for autologous transplantation. This might preclude the use of immunosuppressive medications to prevent allorejection. However, recurrent autoimmune-mediated destruction targeting cell proteins would remain problematic.

Xenogeneic cells are a potential source of cells for transplantation therapy. Because pigs regulate glucose in a similar physiological range to that of humans, and because porcine insulin has been used as an exogenous source of insulin, pigs are generally considered the most promising donor animal. However, islets from xenogeneic pancreata are more immunogenic than allegoric islets

Cloud Computing for Dummies (like me)

The advent and continued impact of Cloud Computing on the worldwide information, communication and digital lifestyle technology space is not a surprise. It makes sense as a concept and fits into the instantaneous, automatic manner in which we manage our lives. This is not simply another technology trend - we are actually on the cusp of an IT revolution.

A critical point of departure on any meaningful discussion on this subject is that it represents an evolution of sorts. Technology has developed to the extent that we are now in a position in which we can run fewer computers but derive more from the situation.

Darwinism posits the evolution of diverse species from a common ancestor. In technology, we are experiencing a phenomenon that is almost the opposite: numerous similar ideas evolving into a single commercially viable entity.

The same effect was witnessed with applications servers, request brokers, n-tier computing, artificial intelligence, etc., where a vague, diverse set of ideas solidified over a period of time into a singular understanding of something that makes commercial or technical sense to the common psyche.

The concept of Cloud Computing suggests the utilisation of different technologies to move the ‘usage' of software processes into a ‘black box' where the end-user does not need to know where this software is running from, what hardware is being used, who the service provider of the virtual processing is, etc.

In other words Cloud Computing refers to the use of the World Wide Web to provide applications or parts thereof without the user having to know where the software resides, what memory, disk space, operating systems, or processing power it requires to operate.

Every Google search that a user fires off from his or her browser can potentially utilise thousands of servers, virtual machines, shared disk resources, and processes. Cloud Computing is a reality.

The use of a bank ATM is a good analogy. A customer will use this facility to withdraw money, for example. He or she does not know what technology is being used, how the device/ATM computer knows amounts, where the money in the mechanical distribution devices comes from or what operating system the ATM runs on.

However, the user certainly understands and rightfully expects output (money, card and receipt), a response time (no more than five seconds) and immediate impact (reduced balance).

There is confusion in the market over how Software as a Service (SaaS) relates to Cloud Computing.

It is best to consider the cloud as the underlying engine that delivers SaaS. Additionally, Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), are all integral parts of Cloud Computing.

The concept of infiniband – dedicated high-bandwidth communications within the cloud – will bring a level of quality and performance to the SaaS offering that would normally not have been possible.

Whilst this all sounds practical, the reality is that Cloud Computing, in its purest form, is yet to materialise in South Africa. It will remain an ideal until such time as we experience affordable broadband Internet access and reliable connection uptime.

Expensive Service Level Agreements would probably allow larger companies to embrace Cloud Computing in one form or another, but smaller companies with limited cash-flow might have to wait until fast, reliable, broadband internet access becomes the norm before they can even consider leveraging off benefits.

And herein lies the irony: it is the small companies with limited capital resources that could potentially benefit the most from Cloud Computing because it holds the promise of low or no cost operating systems and applications, and inexpensive computing devices to run the browser on.

Cloud Computing is not a technological breakthrough, but rather an iterative evolution to get to a point where we could run fewer computers but benefit extensively as a result.

This will translate into savings on software costs, operating system costs, electricity, and hardware.

From a South African perspective, irrespective of how excited we may get about this development, unless we can provide faster Internet access at a more predictable and affordable cost, the concept will remain on the peripherals while the rest of the world thrives on its benefits.

The sooner we get our local bandwidth challenges resolved, the sooner ‘Joe Soap' and his fellow entrepreneurs can benefit from convergent evolution.

In your opinion what is the best Biology Book?

I have been out of school for awhile and forgot a lot of things I learned in Biology over the years. I've decided to start from the beginning and re-learn the fundamentals. Which book would you recommend as a good introductory Biology book? Are the 'For dummies' series good as a stand alone text or are they just a good supplement; and should I purchase a college introductory textbook? Is their an order to Biology classes and if so what are they? For example, Introductory Biology is where you start and it's very comprehensive; where do you go from there? Biochemistry and or genetics?

Earth Science For Dummies

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
earth science for dummies
What implications does the photon belt present us and when, if at all, does Earth enter the belt?

I've heard and read some things about the photon belt, but none of it is conclusive. Some sources say that the extreme concentration of photon energy will disrupt all electrical devices on Earth and some sources say it will push Earth into an estheric (spelling?) dimension. Other sources say that it will take the Earth 2000 years to move through this belt and then other sources say that we have already entered the photon belt. Other sources are just ridiculous. To be honest, I still don't know what the photon belt is exactly and whether it holds any implications for life on Earth at all. How big is this belt and how did it form? How long will it last and has the Earth ever passed through it before? If so, how long does one cycle last? I need someone to really dumb this down for me; like a "Photon belt for dummies" book. No rocket science please.

There is no such THING as the PHOTON BELT. In fact it is actually a theory. The only thing like that is a solar flare from the sun. Photons are particles of light and energy and wouldn't effect anything on Earth.
PS, the photon belt is actually a band of energy from the sun, ie, although it is theoretical I still know a bit about it although it is very little. The sun gives off solar flares but theoretically it gives off a rounded wave or a blast wave that slows down and this band is invisible and orbits around the sun. It isn't actually to do with photons, it is to do with energy although it is on the electromagnetic light spectrum. It contains electrons but is relative to and is related to plasma and energy physics this effects the Earth the same way as a solar flare does so the "solar wave" or the so called "photon belt" physically a belief of when all equipment went and goes down.
I beleve there isn't one but we are always make up theories and beliefs of things to understand anomalies.

Dummy Cycling guide for beginners

Everybody starts from beginner and progress accordingly to different level of fitness and skills, to reach the intermediate and advance stage. However during this process, understanding the basic techniques and appropriate gears required for the particular sport is very importance.

This article is to provide you with the basic information you need to know, as a beginner. After going through this guide, you can start your cycling routine safely!

Things to note:

1. Basic attire and gears:

Getting a bike:

As a beginner in cycling, the first thing is to decide getting the right type of bicycle. There are 3 main categories of bicycles, namely the Road bike, Hybrid bike and Mountain bike.

-       Road bike is light weighted with narrow tyres, offering great speed. It is suitable for confident riders, perfect for fitness riding, touring on bike, and competitions such as cycling races and triathlon races.

-       Hybrid bike is a combination of lightweight and wider tyres, suitable for beginners enjoying leisure riding on the road. It can be used as normal transportation, fitness riding, touring and competitions for novice.

-       Mountain bike is heavy with the widest tyres, perfect for off-road riding, and trail competitions and fitness.

Next is to ensure the correct size of the bike that fits the individual, as everyone has different human anatomy. The size of the bike affects the comfort and is essential for biking efficiency as well as injuries prevention. This bike fitting service is available in major bike stores and the price ranged from fifty to a couple of hundreds.

Getting a helmet:

A helmet is essential for absorbing the impact during a crush. Although it is not a compulsory rule to wear a helmet on the road currently, it is a good practice to wear it for personal safety. There are also many types of helmet:

-       Road helmet is designed for aerodynamic purpose with a sharper and longer shape. The cost can be quite expensive.

-       Commuter/Sport helmet is more affordable and good for leisure riders. It is designed for inexpensive protection and has a rounder shape.

-       Mountain bike helmet is harder as it provides better protection due to the hazardous terrain of cross-country biking.

There are also different sizes to choose from, and the general rule to a correct sized helmet is that it sits straight and level slightly above the eyebrows. It should not wobble when you shake your head but allow slight movement with the strap tightened.

Clothing to wear:

Cycling in our humid and hot weather requires light and comfortable attire. To ensure comfortable cycling experience, the clothing includes:

-       a light and comfortable top that is not too baggy. At this stage, a bicycle vest is not necessary, unless you want to look like a pro.

-       a pair of tights with padded seat is preferred over a baggy short, as it provides the cushioning effect for the butt due to the constant sitting position.

-       a pair of sport shoes and socks is good enough for a beginner.

Other gears (optional):

-       front and rear lights (preferred all times), for safety and visibility to other road users.

-       Water bottle holder.

-       Speedometer to track the cycling speed.

-       Heart rate monitor for tracking performance's heart rate.

2. Proper warm up and cool down

Static stretching before exercise is no longer valid based on recent research.  However, there are still coaches and trainers practicing this old school's method. It is not hard to understand why static stretching is not preferred, if we understand the purpose of warming up. Performing warm up prior to cycling is to prepare the body for the actual action, by bringing up the body's core temperature as well as all the joints and muscles ready for the activity.

Static stretching is done by holding on to a specific muscle's stretch, without movement. Hence, it does not create any joints' movement or increase body temperature, which is critical to prepare the body for the cycle process.

The proper warm up is performed dynamically, involving muscles' activation and stretching. Some examples of dynamic warm up include swinging the leg front and back, and side-to-side, or twisting the trunk, shoulders rotation, high knees stepping on the spot, or even just relax cycling at very easy pace. There has not been any specific research to support how long a warm up session should last; a generic 10-mins is good from experience.

After cycling, a cool down static stretching session is encouraged. First, it helps the body to cool down for recovery, and the stretching enables the worked muscles to elongate to normal flexibility.

Both dynamic warm up and cool down sessions are crucial for efficient cycling, injuries prevention and recovery.

3. Recommended training programs:

Start slow and easy pace during the start and choose flat terrain. The distance and duration for novices depend largely on the individual's fitness. For aerobic benefit, perform at least 30-mins or more for 2-3 times a week. At an average speed of 25, an estimated 10km distance can be achieved within 45 mins. It may take a few weeks to a few months (based on individual) to adapt well and ready for higher intensity (faster pace) or longer distance.

Besides performing actual cycling, strength training at the gym is important. Specific strength training helps to strengthen and tone, especially the lower limbs. Some examples of strength training are spinning on the stationary bike, perform squat and many other legs exercises, as well as trunk exercises to strengthen the lower back and core stability. This is crucial for muscles' power, strength and endurance to sustain the continuous cycling on the road.

4. Cycling ethics:

All sports required ethical execution in order to ensure safety of the individual, as well as others. A lot of elite cyclists may be sharing the same route with beginners, hence learning some of the road ethic is very important. Ethics like keeping to the left lane for slow cyclist, let faster cyclists overtake on the right, turn on bike's lights, abide to road traffic, lookout for other road users, slow down on turns...etc.

Ultimately, what we want is to have a safe environment to enjoy our sports with other commuters/sportsmen.

5. Places to cycle:

There are currently many places in Singapore for novices, such as the park connectors around the island, East Coast park and West Coast park. More may be on the way!

There will be more to learn about cycling on the road, but as for a beginner, this information should be relevant enough to ensure a pleasure and safe biking!

Dummy Security Camera: Shopping Tips

Dummy surveillance cameras can be excellent as security gadgets.  Here are some suggestions and tips on what to look for and how to use them:

Buy a dummy surveillance camera based on your needs
Try to determine your real needs.  A dummy surveillance camera can help deter a possible intrusion or trespass but it is severely limited by its design.  If a burglar ignores it and decides to enter your property, you might have a lot of difficulty in producing video or photographic evidence.  When considering the use of a dummy surveillance camera, keep this in mind.

Make sure you're trying to resolve a low-tech problem
Understand the limitations of a dummy surveillance camera.  A dummy surveillance camera will not work like a real surveillance camera.  It will not be able to monitor suspicious activities.  You cannot wire it to a remote recording unit in order to take photos or videos of areas you wish to monitor.

As such, make sure that the area where you want to use a dummy surveillance camera is well protected – locks installed, alarms in place and other physical barriers such as gates, fences, shutters or window grilles are present.

Consider other low-tech solutions as well.  Installing lights, locks or a fence, for example, can increase the security of your property without requiring you to purchase additional equipment.

Make sure it looks like a camera
You could probably save more if you buy cheaper dummy cameras but make sure you don't skimp on the quality.  The more bogus the camera looks like, the least likely it will be able to deter any burglars or intruders.

Buy a dummy surveillance camera that looks exactly like the real thing.  Choose one that has a red LED light for more a more authentic look.  There are also dummy surveillance cameras that can pan from left to right at intervals of about 1 to 2 minutes.  These are excellent choices if you'll be using one in wide or long areas such as backyards or hallways.  For large rooms or areas, a dome dummy camera will be a better choice.

There are also other features found in dummy surveillance camera models you might want to consider, such as motion detectors and alarms.

Keep the truth a secret
Be careful about letting other people know about your dummy surveillance camera.  If you must tell someone, make sure you can trust them.  To make sure that you leave no doubt in a potential intruder's mind, install a sticker underneath the camera that says, "Warning: CCTV monitored".  That should send out a warning that your premises are being monitored, albeit by a fake security gadget.

Organic Chemistry For Dummies

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
organic chemistry for dummies
What topics are covered in an organic chemistry college course?

I keep hearing nightmare stories about how hard this course is so I've convinced myself that I need to study independently a semester in advance so I won't feel too overwhelmed when I eventually take it.

I bought a cheap ochem textbook (and ochem for dummies to supplement) but I'm not sure what parts I should read in the textbook, unless most courses require that you read the book from beginning to end! (which in that case, might be a good idea to start reading now!)

oh yea, if possible, can you specify which ones are in ochem-I and ochem-II?

I am very grateful for your answers. Thanks in advance!

I can't speak for your school, but the course and expectations can vary quite widely. From my experience, most students succeed with stereochemistry, conformational analysis, nomenclature, etc. They describe static things. If given enough practice, students know what sp3 or axial mean.

Reactions are a different matter. You start with something and end up with something else and the variations are endless. I used reaction mechanisms or mechanistic thinking as a staple of my teaching activities. I also introduced a mechanism workbook to supplement the class. By doing so, I raised my class average on the ACS organic exam by 20 percentile points.

Many students (and professors) resist a mechanism approach. A mechanisms is a logical explanation of the electron movements that lead to the products. I like it. That kind of thinking appeals to me and has worked well with my class.

Learn reaction mechanisms with "The Language of Organic Chemistry; A Guide to Organic Chemistry Mechanisms" at http://www.curvedarrowpress.com. Incidentally, I had a summer high school student learning reactions from the book without taking organic chemistry. The book makes the reactions accessible and I believe my results are a reflection of that.

At the other extreme, some schools emphasize retrosynthesis and can be rigid in how it is formatted. I have tutored some students in schools like that. I mention this because it strikes me as being extremely challenging to try to make use of reactions frequently did not know. It is like translating from English with a foreign language dictionary. I would expect organic chemistry to be extremely challenging at those schools.

Can you hear a meteorite?

OK, strange question....Last night, I heard this subtle but pronounced "rumble". I couldn't tell where it was coming from (outside?), but I have notoriously bad hearing so I'm not surprised (thanks iPod!).

To my surprise, I read in the paper today that a meteorite pretty much passed right over where I live around the same time.

Co-incidence? Or not?

Any astronomy experts opinions greatly appreciated for this "astronomy dummy"! ;)

Thanks!

A meteor traveling faster than the speed of sound can produce a sonic boom, that is probably what you heard. It can produce a sound when it explodes in the atmosphere, or strikes the earth.

Quantum / String Theory For Dummies?

I suck at Physics but have always been interested in string / quantum theory. Does anyone know of any good books / online rescources that are suitable for the layman?

There is one book that I've found to be very good for explaining string theory, and the stuff preceding it, and that's Road to Reality by Roger Penrose. It is thick and has a bit of math in it, but don't panic! The book is very wordy, and you should be able to get a good idea of what's going on even if you skip the equations and the 300 page math section.

If you want to get familiar with the math, the math section isn't too bad either. He walks you through it, and you'll end up learning calculus, complex numbers, group theory, differential geometry and a whole host of other mathematical topics. It may help if you have a working knowledge of high school algebra though.

If you don't want any math at all, you can try The Complete Idiot's Guide to String Theory, by George Musser.

You can also try looking at some of the books in the Demystified series, especially the ones by David McMahon. He has a string theory book out, but it requires some knowledge of multivariable calculus, something that you normally learn in a few calculus courses at a community college.

Before tackling the string theory book, you should look at his other books first, namely Quantum Mechanics Demystified, Linear Algebra Demystified, and Quantum Field theory Demystified. You may even want to take a peek at Complex Variables Demystified. It may also help to start out with Statics and Dynamics Demystified, if the other books don't quite demystify things for you.

ok so now i get what an enantiomer is but i don't understand this question: Why does the body manipulate and synthesize only one type of enantiomer? i know it has something to do with enzymes...

It means they are non-superimposable. Its like your right and left hands...they are opposites of eachother and no matter what way you put them together, you can't have your thumb on the same side when your palms are facing in the same direction.

Quantum Theory For Dummies

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]

Simple quantum physics?

I am extremely interested in quantum physics (gravitational effects, how light travels, the origins of the universe, ect.). I've tried reading several books and watching several films on the subject, but I always end up more confuse then when I started. Is there anything out there like "quantum theory for dummies" or anything like that?

"Modern Physics" textbooks are a great start (authors like Llewelyn or Beiser). There is also the "Idiot's Guide to Quantum Mechanics", although it requires that you already have a grasp on the basic math and physics involved.

But it sounds like you're not really sure what "quantum physics" entails. The word "quantum" refers to quantization, which deals with integer numbers of particles. For example, a quanta of light is a photon. What you are interested in is probably best treated in other fields. Light and light propagation falls squarely under electrodynamics or optics; gravity is treated in quantum but at extremely advanced levels, and is generally ignored outside of the subset of "quantum gravitation". The origins of the universe are either covered in astrophysics or in high energy physics (which definitely has quantum mechanics, but it also requires a working mathematical knowledge of relativistic physics).

If you really want to do some deep, scientist-sanctioned thinking on the trippier parts of physics, work through a Modern textbook first. You'll probably get a better understanding of what the question is in the first place.

Oasis of Light and psalm 32

Psalm 32 reads as follows from the New King James version of the Bible:

1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
   Whose sin is covered.
2 Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity,
And in whose spirit there is no deceit.

3 When I kept silent, my bones grew old
Through my groaning all the day long.
4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;
My vitality was turned into the drought of summer.  Selah
5 I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I have not hidden.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”
And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.  Selah

6 For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You
   In a time when You may be found;
Surely in a flood of great waters
They shall not come near him.
7 You are my hiding place;
   You shall preserve me from trouble;
You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.  Selah

8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye.
9 Do not be like the horse or like the mule,
   Which have no understanding,
Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle,
Else they will not come near you.

10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked;
But he who trusts in the LORD, mercy shall surround him.
11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous;
And shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

Central to this psalm is the Lord giving the royal treatment to his servants in ways that are visible and can be understood as coming from him in the manner of fellowship. Big troubles out there will not come near you, you will get a hiding place or oasis, and the Lord will canvass the surroundings and conditions out there to work things in your favor.

Verse 1 thru 5 says in the King James version of the Bible:, “ Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered, blessed is the man whom the Lord imputes not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile, When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all day long.

For day and night thy hand was upon me, the moisture is turned into the heat of the summer, for I acknowledge my sin unto thee, I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sins."

This section of the psalm is talking about the heavy weight of sin being like the strong excessive heat of the summer. If the psalmist David had been hiking, it would be that he took the wrong trail and felt drained in the excessive heat and in the meantime the Lord had a great trail for him with some cooling spots. That the sin is acting as a heavy weight is only a favor from the Lord, and it is saying come back to all the good favor I have for you, let’s clear the deck of all this junk and get to what I have for you.

The rest of the psalm goes into the strong real time favors that the Lord has for him and others.

Verse 6 says, “ For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time thou mayest be found surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him."

This is one of the big favors from the Lord, there will be big time troubles out there, but it’s not coming near you. You’re not going to be touched by it. Everyone that is godly should be praying to him, no exceptions, while he may be found or before it is too late. You want to preempt your situations, your days, your activities with prayer. And this verse also shows that others may be sharing with you in the favors mentioned further on in the psalms, just as the apostles and disciples shared fellowship with each other in the presence of Jesus.

Verse 7 says, “Though out my hiding place, thou shall preserve me from trouble, thou shall compass me about with songs of deliverance."

This hiding place is more of an oasis. You might think of a hiding place as more of a dark tunnel or basement, more like a bomb shelter in World War 2. But in this case, it is more likely that the hiding place is a place of light, more of an oasis, where for example, I might be kept from trouble, as I’m sitting in the noonday sun sipping juice on a beach in a tropical island in the Caribbean, listening to my favorite tunes and taking a dip in the surf. Another person or others might be with you in sharing this hiding place or oasis.

The hiding place is also of interior light and light of understanding and intelligence. The Lord gifts us gifts of intelligence and enlightens us. There is an oasis of light in the minds and in our understanding.

This hiding place is the Love and the Light of the Lord surrounding you on all sides according to the final verse of this psalm.

Verse 8 and 9 says, “ I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which to go, I will guide thee with mine eye.

Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding, whose mouth must be held in with a bit of brittle, lest they come near unto thee.

Right here, it is saying the Lord will have his eye on the situation, which is of course very specific and something to think about and meditate on, just how the Lord will keep an eye out for you, but this also shows as do the other verses of the psalms, the Lord’s real time presence to any number of situations you could possibly be in.

Verse 9 talks about being not like a mule, it is more an invitation than an admonition. It is saying, that the Lord is watching over you carefully, working things in your favor, just don’t be like a mule, whose rider is also working the road for favor, but the mule doesn’t understand this. The Lord is doing all these great things; just understand that it is him doing it.

This is more like a fellowship thing, rather than being like the dumb mule, there is an invitation to fellowship with the Lord while all this favors are being transferred to your attention and all these good things are taking place.

This is not to pick on the mule, as the mule and similar animals do have intelligence and abilities.

This verse is also very interesting in that it is showing that the Lord believes that people are capable. If Albert Einstein had been teaching a class in quantum theory and says” come into the lecture hall, listen to my lecture and volley with me on the subject, don’t be dumb”, this statement is actually flattering in that Mr. Einstein is seeing you as capable of grasping the subject and that you can go into a legitimate back and forth discussion with him on the topic of complex physics. Einstein, will shed light on the subject, but you will be able to go into the light of understanding on the subject and you should be grateful that you are capable of this.

Another aspect of this verse might also be interpreted as there being an invitation to speak up in the relationship with the Lord, not to be silent like the mule usually is except in the case of Balaam where the mule did speak.

In the case of Balaam his mule actually saw the angel in front of them and then actually spoke to Balaam about it. The mule came forward in speech to interject understanding of the reality of the situation.

Peter and the disciples had discourse with Jesus and he didn’t walk them around and talk to them as if they were dummies and there was consultation between them and with Jesus. Jesus wanted the discourse from Peter and the others who were with them.

Compass about does indicate control, For example I as an individual operating solely in most instances can not compass about, as I’m stepping into so many situations as to the outer surroundings that it is not feasible to say I have any control in any or most of the presenting scenarios. It is important to come to this realization for various reasons, so I don’t get ticked off as among those reasons as I don’t want to be upset of vast outer surroundings that I have little direct control over or in most cases none.

The first call is to stay in the inner circle of Jesus by keeping close to the Lord in prayer, just as the disciples did. This was their oasis, but it wasn't a passive oasis but an oasis of dialogue and understanding.

For example, I go to the beach, expecting the surf I prefer, either for a swim or surfing session. I find the surf just isn’t what I want but, the surroundings are not under my control so why should I be mad about this?

The compassing about is not my area, I can’t control the conditions of the surf. What I want to do is keep all this in mind as I go about into this or similar situations, that is is the Lord's work that the oasis of light be upon my changing circumstances.

Overall this psalm issues an invitation into the royal treatment. Here it seems to say in this psalm that there are others, who are getting the royal treatment, the hiding place, the compassing about, two descriptions of the royal treatment giving by God, the last third of this psalm is depicting that generalized trouble will not come your way. The Lord wants them to have an understanding of what is actually going on, don’t be stupid, saying in this psalm he’ll teach you and guide you, and when you get to the perfect surfing conditions, find the best surfboard and the best spot on the beach, realize it is he that brought this about for you and he wants you to have an understanding of this to the point of fellowship in prayer.

When none of the trouble that is out there comes near you, realize it is His doing.

Even while this happens, you are in the light of his oasis or hiding place in that he is meeting you in those real time situations and you know it is the Lord that is presence to you with the oasis of light.

It might be less dramatic situations, but maybe you were meditating in church and you had one question in mind and then a friend picks you up at church and speaks to that one question, a question that the friend didn’t know was what you were pondering about in that time you spent a church. This is the Lord meeting you in the real time. This might have  Less dramatic overtones than other possible interventions, but nevertheless exciting in that only you knew that this was your question. The Lord might meet you in the exact moment.

With this have an understanding as to why this is better, it could be as simple as the Lord giving you the better sermons, the good churches, the best movies to see, articles to read, TV shows to watch, books to read, comedy shows for comedy. The relationship should be such that you understand that this leading and guidance is sourced from the Lord and is identified as his oasis  rather than a run of good fortune coming from the high seas or some unknown source. And correspondingly you can be grateful, not being like the somewhat unknowing  mule that doesn’t understand always that he got good guidance, good canvassing, and good conditions for what he wanted on his trip down the road or mule trail. It is not dumb luck, but the Lord’s hand or the  favor that is bringing this to pass. Maybe you are lucky but the good luck is directly from the Lord.

Verse 10 and 11 say as the final verses, “ Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but he that trustest in the Lord, mercy shall compass about him"

Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous and shot for joy, all ye that are upright in heart."

This is saying that there will be troubles out there, and be all the more happy for the Lord’s hand in giving you mercy and protection and surrounding you with this royal treatment, the same treatment maybe even King Solomon got.

As per prayer, this psalm is talking about favors from the Lord that are very much real time and situational, and we are invited to consult with the Lord on these favors in prayer. Basically the goal is not to miss out on the favors and to maintain and tend to the fellowship involved thru prayer and good behavior in not compromising all this thru sin and if sin is present to confess it and get right. The central invitation of this psalm is to receive all this with the open arms of understanding, intelligence and insight as to what is going on and that this is part of the fellowship and it is all coming from the Lord’s generous hand. The Lord’s extending hand may and does often include others some of whom will come directly into your path and your part is to pray and also intercede not only for yourself but for others in world for these shining favors emanating from his hiding place, the oasis of light.

Network Marketing For Dummies-Simple Success Strategies Anybody Can Understand

Is network marketing for dummies, or do you need to be a sales and marketing genius to have success in the industry? Can you ever duplicate the results that so many other MLM gurus have achieved and become one of the hunted as opposed to the hunter?

A vast majority of multilevel marketers have been trained to hunt down prospects and bombard them with company tools and sometimes a long sales pitch. This approach is the true definition of network marketing for dummies.

The "old school" methods of MLM just don't work for a major majority of people that enter into the industry and there is definitely a much better way to grow your business.

We have all gone through the nerve wracking experience of having to approach parents, brothers and sisters, cousins, and Uncle Bob to join our newfound path to financial freedom. And some of us had had a bit of success signing up our "warm market". But unfortunately, most network marketers never have any real success with this method. And even if we do, how many of our relatives and friends actually DO anything afterwards?

I once signed up my cousin in my primary opportunity. And what happened after he expressed so much confidence for his success in the industry? He quit after hearing a few no's!

This (or any) business is not for the faint of heart.

And after we go through our rolodex of warm contacts and need more than family members that don't produce, we are forced out into the "cold market". The cold market is just that...EXTREMELY cold.

For the new marketer, going "cold" can be an extremely nerve wracking experience that is very difficult to succeed with. Approaching complete strangers about a business opportunity is just so out of the norm. It seems that only network marketers are faced with the daunting task of signing up a guy that happened to be in isle 10 at the grocery store, and was just there to pick up some toilet paper:)

So what's a hungry and relentless marketer to do if he finds these old methods distasteful?

How about tapping into what so many other intelligent marketers have found to be a literal gold mine for building their business?

It's a fact that more and more business transactions are being made through the use of technology, specifically the internet. And this fact definitely applies to network marketing also.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the old methods of building your business. After all, that is what the MLM industry was built on. But why not add an awesome weapon to your network marketing arsenal? It's a weapon that can end the long and energy sapping task of achieving success.

Quantum Physics For Dummies

These days, the buzzword is "Quantum Physics." As popular among researchers as it is among suburban soccer moms, it is important to have a grasp of the basics. Most important is the Schroedinger's Cat thought experiment. So Schroedinger sits around with his buddies and says, "The cat shredded the drapes again. What if I put that thing in a box...no no, let me finish...and rigged it up with some poison gas?" Then his scientific mind started working. "Oh, but then I wouldn't know if the cat had died until I opened the box. Before I observe the cat, it would be 50% alive and 50% dead. I think I'll call this notion quantum indeterminacy: because poison doesn't kill cats, conscious observation does."

It sounds like a far-fetched way of putting it. Physicists Stephen Hawking notably said, "Whenever I hear about Schroedinger's Cat, I reach for my gun." Despite how obnoxious the guy at the cocktail party might have sounded while explaining it, the concept is definitely intriguing. The belief that consciously chosen observation can change the world is founded in a number of scientific studies.

We Are Made Of Energy

Stars use massive amounts of energy to transform one type of matter into another type of matter. That is on a huge scale. On a tiny scale, this means that matter equals energy. Einstein's equation E=MC2 explains that nicely. The tiniest units, known as quanta, are nothing more than clumps of energy. Our bodies are nothing more than a group of quanta.

Schroedinger and Stephen Hawking were just clusters of elementary particles of energy having a disagreement. At any moment, either one of them could have obliterated the other from the face of their earth. Maybe they both did, multiple times over. Look through the people at a party, and have some fun with their mutable existences.

Energy Can Be Predicted And Controlled

Through observation, you create reality. It's a very useful tool; pay attention to that physics hot-shot at the party, then turn your back and move out of earshot. Poof! Completely unobserved, his quanta no longer exists. So convenient! You don't even need your gun.

This is supported by the ground-breaking Two-Slit experiment. A fixed electron gun fires electrons through a wall with two slits at another wall behind. The particles go through the slits, but then land willy-nilly all over the back wall, as if they were waves of light. Only when photons are shot at the electrons, illuminating them, do they behave like particles should. This proves that electron guns don't kill people; it's the act of using them in ridiculous experiments to prove confusing hypotheses that does.

We Are Always Observing Ourselves and the World

The Heisenberg Uncertainty principle states that when we observe an object's speed, we can't know its position. We can only observe one thing at a time. To put it another way, when we're worrying about how much work we've been assigned, we can't pay attention to our boss putting the moves on a potential significant other a few cubicles over. The world is one big quantum indeterminate state; what we choose to observe determines what is. This is because everything is energy; thoughts are also energy, therefore thoughts control everything.

This article was obviously not written by a scientist. As a writer and business owner, I am far from qualified to talk about quantum physics. You must observe this writing and come to your own conclusions. Meanwhile, if you're trying to deal with an undesirable situation - the boss is demanding some report, or your spouse wants you to take out the trash, simply say, "Sorry, I haven't observed you yet, therefore you don't exist." The best thing about this is, even if they're mad, they can't refute your point. You can act as though they don't exist, and they can't do anything about it!

Realities of Space: Science of Real Space Battles

Now, Let's Talk Technology

First, pending a major development in propulsion technology, combat spacecraft would likely get around the same way the Apollo spacecraft went to the Moon and back: with orbit changes effected by discrete main-engine burns. The only other major option is a propulsion system like ion engines or solar sails, which produce a very low amount of thrust over a very long time. However, the greater speed from burning a chemical, nuclear, or antimatter rocket in a single maneuver is likely a better tactical option. One implication of rocket propulsion is that there will be relatively long periods during which Newtonian physics govern the motions of dogfighting spacecraft, punctuated by relatively short periods of maneuvering. Another is that combat in orbit would be very different from combat in "deep space," which is what you probably think of as how space combat should be - where a spacecraft thrusts one way, and then keeps going that way forever. No, around a planet, the tactical advantage in a battle would be determined by orbit dynamics: which ship is in a lower (and faster) orbit than which; who has a circular orbit and who has gone for an ellipse; relative rendezvous trajectories that look like winding spirals rather than straight lines.

Second, there are only a few ways to maneuver the attitude of a spacecraft around - to point it in a new direction. The fast ways to do that are to fire an off-center thruster or to tilt a gyroscope around to generate a torque. Attitude maneuvers would be critical to point the main engine of a space fighter to set up for a burn, or to point the weapons systems at an enemy. Either way, concealing the attitude maneuvers of the space fighter would be important to gain a tactical advantage. So I think gyroscopes ("CMGs," in the spacecraft lingo) would be a better way to go - they could invisibly live entirely within the space fighter hull, and wouldn't need to be mounted on any long booms (which would increase the radar, visible, and physical cross-section of the fighter) to get the most torque on the craft. With some big CMGs, a spacecraft could flip end-for-end in a matter of seconds or less. If you come upon a starfighter with some big, spherical bulbs near the midsection, they are probably whopping big CMGs and the thing will be able to point its guns at you wherever you go. To mitigate some of the directionality of things like weapons fire and thruster burns, space fighters would probably have weapons and engines mounted at various points around their hull; but a culture interested in efficiently mass-producing space warships would probably be concerned about manufacturing so many precision parts for a relatively fragile vessel, and the craft would likely only have one main engine rather than, say, four equal tetrahedral engines.

How About Weapons?

We have to consider just how you might damage a spacecraft to put it out of action.

Explosions are basically a waste of energy in space. On the ground, these are devastating because of the shock wave that goes along with them. But in the vacuum of space, an explosion just creates some tenuous, expanding gases that would be easily dissipated by a hull. No, to damage spacecraft systems, you can't hit them with gas unless it's really, really concentrated and energetic. So unless you want to just wait till your enemy is close enough that you can point your engines at him, the best bets for ranged weapons are kinetic impactors and radiation.

A kinetic impactor is basically just a slug that goes really fast and hits the enemy fighter, tearing through the hull, damaging delicate systems with vibrations, throwing gyroscopes out of alignment so that they spin into their enclosures and explode into shards, puncturing tanks of fuel and other consumables, or directly killing the pilot and crew. You know...bullets. But it sounds much more technical and science-fictiony to say "mass driver" or "kinetic lance" or something of the sort. Of course, the simplest way to implement this sort of weapon in space is just as some kind of machine gun or cannon. Those will work in space (ask the Soviets, they tested a cannon on their first Salyut space station), and the shells will do plenty of damage if they hit anything. However, space is filled mostly with empty space, and hitting the enemy ships might be a challenge. Furthermore, if the impactors are too large, the enemy could counter them by firing their own point-defense slugs and knocking the shells out of line. Therefore, I contend that the most effective kinetic space weapons would be either flak shells or actively thrusting, guided missiles. The flak shells would explode into a hail of fragmented shards, able to tear through un-armored systems of many craft at once without the shell directly hitting its target, or able to strike a target even after it tries to evade with a last-minute engine burn. The missiles would be a bit different from the missiles we are used to on Earth, which must continuously thrust to sustain flight. In space, such a weapon would rapidly exhaust its fuel and simply become a dummy shell. No, a space missile would either be fired as an unguided projectile and power up its engine after drifting most of the way to its target, or it would fire its engine in sporadic, short bursts. A definite downside to kinetic weapons on a starfighter is that they would impart momentum to the fighter or change its mass properties. Very large cannons or missiles might therefore be impractical, unless the fighter can quickly compensate for what is essentially a large rocket firing. Even that compensation might give the enemy just the window he needs...

Radiation-based weapons that burn out the electronics of a spacecraft sound exotic, but are still potentially achievable. This would be the attraction of nuclear weapons in space: not the explosion, which would affect just about nothing, but the burst of energetic particles and the ensuing electromagnetic storm. Still, such a burst would have to be either pretty close to the target vessel to scramble its systems, or it would have to be made directional in some way, to focus the gamma-ray and zinging-proton blast. But while we're talking about focused energy weapons, lets just go with a tool that we already use to cut sheet metal on Earth: lasers. In space, laser light will travel almost forever without dissipating from diffraction. Given a large enough power supply, lasers could be used at range to slice up enemy warships. The key phrase there, though, is "given a large enough power supply." Power is hard to come by in the space business. So, expect space laser weapons to take one of three forms: small lasers designed not to destroy, but to blind and confuse enemy sensors; medium-sized lasers that would be fired infrequently and aimed to melt specific vulnerable points on enemy space fighters, like antennae, gimbals, and maneuvering thrusters; and large lasers pumped by the discharge from a large capacitor or similar energy storage device to cut a physical slice into the enemy craft wherever they hit. Such a large weapon would likely only be fired at the very beginning of a battle, because the commander of a ship with such a weapon would not want to keep his capacitor charged when it might unexpectedly blow its energy all at once once he's in the thick of things.

Deflector shields like those in fiction are not possible at present, but it would still make sense to armor combat spacecraft to a limited extent. The spaceframes of the fighters would likely be designed solely for the space environment; the actual ships would be launched within the payload fairings of a rocket or assembled in space. If launched from the ground, armor must be minimized to reduce the launch weight of the spacecraft. But if built and launched in space, it would make sense to plate over vital systems of the vehicle. Thick armor would prevent flak or small lasers from piercing delicate components, and might mitigate a direct strike from a kinetic impactor or heavy cutting laser. However, the more heavily armored and massive a space fighter is, the more thrust it will take to maneuver in orbit and the more energy it will take to spin in place. (Here's where computer games get space combat all wrong: the mass of a huge space cruiser would not place an upper limit on the speed of a vehicle, but it would reduce the acceleration a given engine could produce compared to the same engine on a less massive vehicle.)

I'm assuming that we'd have some intrepid members of the United Earth Space Force crewing these combat vessels. Or, at least, crewing some of them - robotic drone fighters would be a tremendous boon to space soldiers, but the communication lag between planets and vessels in orbit would make the split-second judgments of humans necessary at times. (Until we perfect AIs... but if we're giving them the space fighters from the beginning, we deserve the robot uprising we'll get.) The crews will hardly be sitting around nice conference-room command bridges with no seat belts; nor will they be standing upright in slate-gray console pits with glowing glass displays all over. It's not even a good idea for them to have windows, which would be vulnerable to flak and could give the crew an intense sense of disorientation as the spacecraft maneuvers, and could give them tremendous trouble adapting to rapid changes in light levels as the ship rotates near a planet or star. No, they should be strapped into secure couches and centrally located in the most protected part of the spacecraft. They should also be in full pressure suits, and the interior cabin of the spacecraft should already be evacuated - to prevent fires, or any secondary damage if all the atmosphere rushes out a hull breach. This also reduces the need for escape pods. Camera views from the exterior of the ship and graphical representations of the tactical situation would then be projected directly onto helmet faceplates.

Now, for the final word, let's say the United Earth Space Force defeats the Martian rebels in orbit. What do we do to hit them on the ground? Well, strategic weapons from space are easy: kinetic impactors again. You chuck big ol' spears, aerodynamically shaped so they stay on target and don't burn up in the atmosphere, onto ground targets and watch gravitational potential energy turn into kinetic energy and excavate you a brand-new crater. At some point, though, the imperialist Earthlings probably want to take over the existing infrastructure on Mars. Time to get out the Space Marines!

It's not terribly expensive or difficult, comparatively speaking, to get people from orbit down to a planet surface. You fall. This is the purpose of a space capsule. What's really, really, prohibitively difficult is getting them back up again. So, the victorious orbital forces would have to bring in a transport ship chock full of Space Marines and drop them all at once in little capsules (little because they can only be so big for the atmosphere to effectively brake them, and because you don't want all your Marines perishing in some unfortunate incident). Some orbital forces would remain in place to threaten the ground with bombardment and give the Marines a bit more muscle, but really, the ground-pounders are going to have to be pretty self-sufficient. If they ever want to come back up, they would have to build and/or fuel their own ascent vehicle. (This is the problem facing any NASA Mars efforts, too: getting back up through the Martian atmosphere is much harder than any of the lunar ascents were.)
