British Professor Nicholas Carr highlights what he believes is a negative assertion of the Internet by stating that Internet use reduces the deep thinking that leads to true creativity. He also says that hyperlinks and over stimulation means that the brain must give most of its attention to short-term decisions. The vast availability of information on the World Wide Web overwhelms the brain and hurts long-term memory. This is as a result of large quantities of stimuli leading to a very large cognitive load making it difficult to remember anything.
Steven Pinker a Psychologist offers a counter argument that the Internet gives people more control over what they do, and that research and reasoning never came naturally to people and asserts that the Internet is actually making people smarter.
So where is the evidence?
UCLA professor of psychiatry Gary Small studied brain activity in experienced web surfers versus casual web surfers. The resulting evidence suggested that the distinctive neural pathways of experienced Web users had developed because of their Web use. Dr. Small concluded, "The current explosion of digital technology not only is changing the way we live and communicate, but is rapidly and profoundly altering our brains."
I guess time will tell how that will transpire. One thing I will say is that it is quite shocking how quickly the Internet can be grasped. For example whilst working at a pre-school centre I observed how an 18-month old girl, wearing a nappy and with a dummy in her mouth and still not acquired the power of speech, was able to pop herself in front of a computer, switch it on and then access a game she enjoyed playing. He said that because much of the ubiquity of modern technology—cameras, recorders, and such—people may not want to act in unusual ways for fear of getting a bad name. People can see pictures and videos of you on the Internet, and this may make you act differently.
Social Media sites are also creating an element of people power that the marketers are in more control of than the governments (unless you take another stance and see the government controlling the marketer's – that's another article) The New York Times suggested that social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter helped people organise the political revolutions in Egypt where it helped certain classes of protesters organise protests, communicate grievances, and disseminate information.
It's no surprise then that in some countries social media sites are vetted and filtered and in some cases prohibited. A few years ago Turkey banned YouTube because somebody uploaded a video stating Ataturk (The founder of Turkey's Republic and adorned public figure) was Gay. For a country wanting to join the EU this was perhaps not a good move.
One thing for sure is that the Internet has bought the world closer and this indirectly leads to changes in the way people interact with each other and how businesses are operated compared to the world before Internet. In fact, Internet has opened up many business opportunities while at the same time making business more challenging due to the global competition effect.
The explosion of the Internet has resulted in social media marketing being the future of marketing,with tools such as blogs, Facebook and Twitter at the forefront. Geoff Livingston offers a dynamic definition of Social Media:

2. You have to believe in yourself. You have to have the confidence that you can accomplish this absurd, wild-eyed goal you've set for yourself. You have to believe that you have the capacity, the competency, and that you really can accomplish it. That's why Bill Bartmann spent so much of time teaching business people how to raise their level of self confidence and self esteem. Only when you have an internal confidence and feel good about who you are, can you accomplish those goals. Have a confidence that you're not afraid to tackle your goals. 3. Sharing the vision. Telling people what you want to do creates a wonderful environment where most people will want to help us. People are good and want to help others. 4. Execute. Execute the decision. Do it. Get off the couch. Don't just daydream and think about it. 5. Focus. Focus is where people begin to strive and get to where they want to go. When you get off the couch and start doing, sometimes you get lost. You know them because they did one thing very, very well. Zone in on the one thing you want to do. Don't let the noise and chatter of life get in your way.
6. Never give up. You have a goal and confidence. You've shared the vision and you've gotten off the couch and executed. You're moving forward, and you're choking in on it and focusing on the one thing that you can do better than anyone else. Then, you get to number six. Don't ever give up. No matter how well you've done the first five, or how smart you are, there's going to be something that will derail you. It happens. We should live in a world where we aren't worried about tomorrow, where we aren't concerned about what's going to happen. Because no matter what comes down the pike, or whatever happens, whatever obstacles get in our way, we know that we are not going to give up. If we believe in ourselves and our vision, and focus on it, we should be able to climb over any obstacle.
All the great people, the leaders and people we model after, have had challenges, adversity, problems, and mistakes. They all had one thing in common—they didn't give up. They didn't quit when the going got tough. Things happen in business every single day, but you have to get past it and get over it if you want to succeed. If you let those things beat you, you lose. Conversely, if you don't relent and don't give up, you win. If you do all five keys to success, and give up the first time it gets challenging or don't have the answer, then you will still lose.

Also the "Screen writing for dummies" book also calls for other page reference points for CHARACTER NAME at 21/2 inches from the left margin, DIALOGUE 21/2 inches from left hand side of page (1 inch from left margin), 61/2 inches from the left hand side of the page (5 inches from the left margin), PARENTHETIC ALS 31/2 inches from left hand side of the page (2 inches from left margin. I don't understand what the fraction by 2 is and how to use it as a formatting measurement in Microsoft Word.

Jewelry Making And Beading For Dummies - Book Review
Jewelry Making & Beading for Dummies was first published in 2005 and is probably the most popular book available for teaching beginners about the basics of jewelry making and beading.
When the book was published a few years back I had already been making jewelry for quite some time so I wasn't really interested in getting it.
Now that I focus more on teaching jewelry making I am always looking for jewelry making information that can help beginners, so I decided to get the book and review it.
Here is an overview of the contents of the book and my opinion about each section. If you are new to beading and/or jewelry making I hope you will find this useful.
The book is divided into five parts: Part 1: Creating Irresistible Jewelry, Part 2: Discovering Simple Jewelry-Making Techniques, Part 3: Implementing Design Ideas, Trends, and More, Part 4: Building on Your Jewelry Making Hobby, and Part 5: The Part of Tens.
The first part, Creating Irresistible Jewelry, covers from A to Z everything a beginner needs to know about the different strings, chords, and wire options available. There is also a complete explanation of the basic jewelry making tools and the different kinds of connectors (head pins, eye pins, jump rings, etc.) and clasps.
There is also a very comprehensive explanation about bead types, crystal beads, pearls, and stones. A small section is also dedicated to explaining where you can find jewelry making materials both online and offline.
The section finishes with a chapter dedicated to explaining how to best set up your workspace.
So Part 1 of the book is basically a description of "what" whereas Part 2, Discovering Simple Jewelry-Making Techniques, gets into the "how."
Not surprisingly, it starts with stringing and knotting and how to use crimps. The next chapter is dedicated to Bead Weaving and focuses primarily on weaving with seed beads.
I thought it was a little unusual to focus so much on seed beads as there are many beautiful pieces you can make weaving with beads other than seed beads. So I think this chapter could be greatly improved by showing more details in that area, but still it does cover basic weaving patterns.
Part 2 ends with a chapter on wire wrapping which includes how to choose wire, basic wire wrapping techniques, and a nice section on how to use a wire jig.
So Parts 1 and 2 take up about half of the book and really cover everything you need to know as a beginner. I should also mention that there are simple projects spread throughout both sections so that you can practice what you are learning as you go along.
Looking at this from the perspective of a complete beginner, I think Parts 1 and 2 of the book are all you really need.
Part 3 of the book consists primarily of beading projects, and while they are all very nice pieces of jewelry, there are very few graphics showing step by step how to make the pieces. In my experience working with beginners I think many would find it difficult to make these pieces without detailed instructions or hands-on help like a class or video.
So if I were a beginner, I would learn everything in Parts 1 and 2, and put the book on the shelf for a while, and then maybe revisit Part 3 later after I had gained more experience.
Part 4, in my opinion, goes off on a tangent that I don't think has much to do with learning beading and jewelry making.
Things are covered like how to decorate other objects with beads, making jewelry with kids, hosting a jewelry party, and tips for what to do if you want to turn your jewelry making hobby into a business.
I will say that the part about turning your jewelry making hobby into a business has some very good tips, especially on how to correctly price your jewelry. It shows you how to make sure that you include a cost for how long it takes you to make a jewelry piece. Most jewelry makers forget to do this and it leads them to significantly underprice their jewelry.
The final section, Part 5: The Part of Tens is so named because it gives you three chapters of Top Tens. The first top 10 is jewelry suppliers. It is good but a little dated. New suppliers have emerged since the book was published that are better than some listed in the book.
The second top 10 is common jewelry making mistakes to avoid and has very good tips for avoiding mistakes that beginners commonly make.
The third top 10 is ideas for making money selling your jewelry. There are some very good ideas in this section.
Overall, I would recommend this book to beginners as a good resource to get started. But keep in mind that if you're learning style is more suited to learning by seeing things in action then you may have trouble actually learning beading by looking at this book simply because there are not a lot of "how to" graphics.
