Six Keys To Business Success And Wealth Creation With Billionaire Bill Bartmann
There are six things Bill Bartmann has used through the course of his lifetime to create massive business success and long-term wealth creation. They've helped him go from places most people couldn't imagine to the other extreme, also places most people couldn't imagine. The six things are simple, but they are actually profound when you implement them.
1. The first thing is you have to think big. Most people think they'll increase their business 10%, that's not thinking big, that's thinking small. If you're a Fortune 500 company already, 10 or 15% might be enough. But if you are a mom and pop company, 15% will take you forever to get there. Bill Bartmann grew my company 15,000% for four years—not 15%, 15,000%. He was one of the Ink 500 fastest growing companies in America four years in a row. It's because he not only had amazing employees who did great things, but because he followed principle number one—he thought big. We weren't intimidated by the prospect that we were going to grow a company to a certain percentage. Did we think it would be 15,000%? No, we didn't say that. It isn't necessary that you are that specific on the percentile. What is important is that you are willing to think big, that you be willing to stretch your imagination.
2. You have to believe in yourself. You have to have the confidence that you can accomplish this absurd, wild-eyed goal you've set for yourself. You have to believe that you have the capacity, the competency, and that you really can accomplish it. That's why Bill Bartmann spent so much of time teaching business people how to raise their level of self confidence and self esteem. Only when you have an internal confidence and feel good about who you are, can you accomplish those goals. Have a confidence that you're not afraid to tackle your goals. Unless you have that internal confidence, can find it or a way to get it, you're going to have a real challenge in front of you.
3. Sharing the vision. Telling people what you want to do creates a wonderful environment where most people will want to help us. People are good and want to help others. They are solid, decent people, and if they know what you want out of life, they'll help you to the extent they can. If everybody you came in contact with helped a little, passed on information, or referred you to someone they know, or share something that will be helpful to you, it would be a great asset. They can't do that if you haven't shared with them your vision. Otherwise, how will they know to refer you, or to give you some advice? It is crucial that you share the vision. That isn't just to outsiders, it's also with every one of your employees. If they know, it's amazing what they will bring to the table.
4. Execute. Execute the decision. Do it. Get off the couch. Don't just daydream and think about it. There's a popular book and movie called The Secret, which is good, but they left people dangling a bit. It left people believing that they could wish for and envision something and it would just happen. That won't happen just by osmosis; no, we have to think about it and execute. We have to get off the couch and do something. Years ago, Bill Bartmann was in a negotiation with a guy who is famous for running a great bank and doing it well. He is a really smart guy and good businessman. One of the statements he made is that when it came to the business plan for his bank, he could leave it sitting on an airline seat and his competitor could pick it up and he wouldn't worry about it. The plan was good and important, but he knew it wasn't the plan—it was the execution. Most of the people who see your plan can know what you're going to do, but they're never going to get there. They're never going to start. If you don't get off the couch and do something with those first three keys of success, not much will happen. These six keys are important, but remember this one, because if you don't execute, nothing will happen and you will never have the wealth creation power you want.
5. Focus. Focus is where people begin to strive and get to where they want to go. When you get off the couch and start doing, sometimes you get lost. In order to be really successful, you have to choke it in, focus, concentrate like a laser beam and say that you want to be really, really good at one thing. You want to do one thing so well that you will be the best at it, whatever it is. When you narrow in your focus and become really, really good at that thing, it's amazing how good you will become. Look at Starbucks. It's coffee. There has been coffee for hundreds of years, and they took it and said, we are going to do coffee better than anybody. They got where they are by focusing on one thing. Look at anyone who has accomplished something big; you don't know them because they've done a bunch of things. You know them because they did one thing very, very well. Zone in on the one thing you want to do. Don't let the noise and chatter of life get in your way.
6. Never give up. You have a goal and confidence. You've shared the vision and you've gotten off the couch and executed. You're moving forward, and you're choking in on it and focusing on the one thing that you can do better than anyone else. Then, you get to number six. Don't ever give up. No matter how well you've done the first five, or how smart you are, there's going to be something that will derail you. It happens. We should live in a world where we aren't worried about tomorrow, where we aren't concerned about what's going to happen. Because no matter what comes down the pike, or whatever happens, whatever obstacles get in our way, we know that we are not going to give up. If we believe in ourselves and our vision, and focus on it, we should be able to climb over any obstacle.
All the great people, the leaders and people we model after, have had challenges, adversity, problems, and mistakes. They all had one thing in common—they didn't give up. They didn't quit when the going got tough. Things happen in business every single day, but you have to get past it and get over it if you want to succeed. If you let those things beat you, you lose. Conversely, if you don't relent and don't give up, you win. If you do all five keys to success, and give up the first time it gets challenging or don't have the answer, then you will still lose.
These six things have taken Bill Bartmann from bankruptcy to massive wealth creation as a billionaire. You know his story. It isn't a question of intelligence. It's only the things that happen inside your head that matter. You have these six tools. Each one of them is entirely up to you, no one else. Your success is entirely up to you.
