Reading Music For Dummies

But how easy is it to actually get backstage?

I was flipping through the book "Classical Music for Dummies" and read a bit about going backstage and meeting the performers.
The authors made it seem like it is very easy and common for us "regular folks" to just walk backstage and chat with the soloist, conductor, etc. They recommended that everybody do it (they even went so far as to suggest we invite the star back to our own home for "a home cooked meal"!).
But realistically, is this actually possible? I suppose if you are talking about local orchestras then it's not a big deal. But if you attend concerts in New York, Chicago, etc with the top orchestras/conductors etc., can I just waltz backstage and hang out?
If I want to chat with Abbado, Barenboim, or Anne-Sophie Mutter (be still my heart!) - can I really just head on backstage? Don't they have security guys to keep you out?
Or do you just have to wait by the outside stage door and hope for a quick autograph?
Anybody have much luck with this?

I can only answer about the MET in NYC. Before 9/11 it was as easy as leaving a note at the door a few days before the performance to be able to go backstage and meet the performers .... most of them would OK all that requested ..some would eliminate autograph dealers and their personal stalkers ...but almost everyone got in after 9/11 it was suspended then restarted on a very limited basis ... but you had to get yourself on a list approved by the artist

Every house will have a different policy as well as every artist so you must inquire days before the performance

I once met a very very elderly lady whose favorite opera memory was as a very little girl being at the stage door of the old MET waiting for a glimpse of Caruso ... she not only saw him but he sang for his crowd of adoring fans
