how do i completely wipe a hard drive clean?

i need to know how to completely wipe a hard drive back to brand new and i want everything gone. does anyone know any step-by-step instrucions for dummies on this? and is it possible to download my OS to a usb drive?
thanks agross. how do i format it?

If you are wanting it clean for you, then you can simply format the drive. If yo are wanting it clean to sell or send to someone else, then use a program called DoD that will write over the drive with 0's and 1's repeatedly so nothing can be recovered.
http://www.dban.org/ is a good application for this.

I've never tried to install an OS to a USB drive, but I don't see why it wouldn't work if the drive was large enough.

To Format in Windows, Right Click on My Computer, and select Manage. Then on the left side click on Disk management under Storage. You should see your Hard Drives listed in the left Pane now. Right click on the drive you want to Format and select format, if it's your primary system drive it will by Grayed out however. Quick Format will clear the drive, but all the data will still be recoverable by 3rd party applications, full Format will clear out more, but still can be recovered.
If it's your system drive you are wanting to Format, then you need to get a Floppy or USB drive, and format it with the option check to make it a System recovery or something like that. Reboot and boot from that Floppy, USB Drive and at the C: prompt, type in Format C: and hit enter. (make sure you really want to do this!)
