Ham Radio For Dummies

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]

what's the difference between these two amateur radio operating manuals??

I am trying to purchase an ARRL operating manual for radio amateurs, the latest edition is the 9th edition, but I don't want to spend that much money on a book, so I have been shopping on Amazon and other web sites, and found the 8th edition, and I was wondering what is the main difference??
Would an 8th edition be ok to go by??
I have also purchased the handbook for radio communication
now you're talking
and
ham radio for dummies,

will these do about the same as the operating manuals?
Help!!

I suppose it all depends what you want to do with the manuals - it seems to be a thing to bring new ones out every year. Now for call books, that's fine, but radio theory and design doesn't change really - well ovelooking the fact that I had to learn transistor theory three different times as they were never sure just HOW the things worked - we had electrons flowing, then they said 'oh no - it's actually holes going backwards' and then in the end they decided it was all quantum levels LOL (and anybody who thinks they can understand quantum theory better go back and read the textbooks) but I digress.

If it's to learn the theory for the license exam, either edition would be fine really. If it's for updated designs for a DIY rig, then the 9th would have newer. I do know people who keep old copies of the RSGB versions simply because there is additional information every issue and the older stuff never gets reprinted. If you can afford it - get both ;)

Ham Radio for Dummies? Probably not much good for boning up for the exam - judging by any of the Dummies series I've seen it glosses over a lot of stuff that you really do NEED to know if you want your ticket
