Anyone know of a good basic/short ASVAB study guide?

I don't need a smart-ass remark about the military or your own personal thoughts on anything whatsoever, just a recommendation about which ASVAB study guides are short and basic. I checked-out the ASVAB FOR DUMMIES book, but its not what I am looking for. I really want a to-the-point Mathematics section, with the BASICS and formulas. I am going ARMY, but have been to the Air Force recruiters office and scored well enough to get in there, so the Army should be cake. Thats why I just want basic review and whats covered. Thanks!

Dont go with asvab for dummies cause who its intended for are, well, in the name. In truth there is no short asvab guide if you want to excel in it. They do offer them but if you wana score high go with the Princeton review 3rd edition ASVAB study guide. It has very thorough math and reading sections which are the most important. It also covers the sub sections which are somewhat important cause if you dont score high enough in some of these they wont let you do certain jobs. But dont freak out, you dont have to do extremely well in the sub sections to qualify. Just really basic shit. There is one book i saw at boarders that is a 2 week study guide, but i didnt use it. If you devote some study time, you can work through the Princeton review in about 2 weeks, maybe a week but i dont recommend that cause you will over saturate yourself. Personally i recommend the Princeton Review though because i used it and it worked for me. Another one to look at is the Kaplan 2011 edition, but it focuses more on the sub sections. They also both cover the test very well and tell you everything you would want to know. One tip encase you dont get these is that if your questions get harder and harder, you are doing well. The test adjust with how you are doing. If you start getting addition problems your in trouble!!!! Hope this helps good luck with your military career!

Conceptual understanding of electromagetism from the perspectiveof Maxwell?

I know next to nothing about electromagnetism, except that that is light. I know charge in motion turns into a magnetic field and that a magnetic field in motion turns into a charge field. I think someone once told me that sin^2 + cos^2 = 1 was related to how the light wave was in a three-dimensional way of looking at it, and that somehow a magnetic field and a charge field are at 90 degree angles to each other and (if graphed on a 3-D graph). One would be a sin wave compared to a cos wave,with one being a magnetic field and the other being a charge field. I don't need any advanced mathematics (I am barely getting a taste of derivates in my study of Calculus, and that is not very advanced compared to the math that I have found on the internet about Maxwell's equations). I also have a very small taste of trigonometry at this point. If you would like to give me a "Maxwell's explanation for dummies" I would appreciate it. LOL. Thanks.

Normally if an electromagnetic wave is traveling along positive x-direction. Then most simply it is a plane polarized wave. so at every point along x axis there is Electric field in Y direction only and its magnitude will be fluctuating simple harmonically with time. Similarly magnetic field will be fluctuating along z direction only and the phase of their instantaneous value will be shifting along positive x-axis with speed of light.

Sometimes the E-vector may rotate in the yz plane with same magnitude at the revolution frequency of the e m wave. Such a condition is known as c(theta) and cosine(theta), respectively as H vector has always to be perpendicular to E it would also undergo similar changes. This is what some one must have referred to you as sin^2 + cos^2 , I think.

Algebra for Dummies: How to Start

The most importand factor about algebra and mathematics is that you really need to practise in order to understand the concepts. There are a lot of algebra books, tutorials, interactive lessons, online tutors and courses that can help you a lot, but without some homework and practise you are bound to fail.

You cannot remember the thousands of algebra concepts and equations without truly understand what each equation really means. What is the reason behind every algebra concept.

A key factor is to take small steps. For example learn one algebra equation, practise it for a couple of days, then move on to the next. Move on only if you feel comfortable with what you've learned. Every time you move on to the next algebra concept increase the difficulty of the equations or the exercises you're trying to solve.

Follow this procedure and soon you'll notice that your brain will be able to absorb mathematics and algebra quicker and easier. You will start to like it.

Another thing is that algebra requires you to apply specific rules. You will find these basic rules in a lot of equations and algebra concepts. The more you practise the basic algebra rules the better you'll become at learning different and more difficult algebra concepts.

A lot of people learning algebra miss out on the basic rules. In the end they mess up everything.

Remember, rules are everywhere. Our society is based on specific rules. Same goes for algebra. Treat algebra rules like a game and you'll like it.

You may end up wondering.. Why should I learn math and algebra? That's a good question. You must ask yourself this question before you go on. Algebra will help you solve problems, make decisions, apply strategies and a lot more. If you want your skills to worth gold then you have to learn math and
especially algebra. If you want your mental powers to reach top level then you have to learn algebra.

If you like mathematics then you know that in order to move to advanced mathematics you have to know the basics of algebra. Algebra is everywhere in your everyday life. Boolean Algebra?

OK. I have read my text book too many times to count. I am great with math and have a 4.0 in my electrical engineering classes up to this point.

Can anyone explain it in a "Boolean Algebra for Dummies" kind of way. Much appreciated.

BTW it has to do with Digital circuits and logic gates.

Have a look at some ladder diagrams (PLC programming). They represent relay logic circuits and basically every rung in a ladder is a boolean statement of: relay = contact a and/or contact b etc.
Even quite complicated boolean expressions look simple when drawn as ladder diagram. It also helps understand why a or (a and b) = a or why a or (not a and b) = a and b. You simply see the flow of "logical current".
Try http://www.plcs.net/contents.shtml and read links under "creating programs" header. Just to get that simple idea (even without timers, counters and so on)
In ladder "and" is in series and "or" is in parallel. "not" is normally closed contact.
If you need to "not" an expression then invert its contents:
not (a and b) = not a or not b
not (a or b) = not a and not b
or use another "relay" bit to store (a and b) and use it as normally closed later.

High school algebra 1 & 2. Help?

I'm a ninth grader and I am currently taking algebra 1. I want to go into medical field which requires a lot of calculus, so I was wondering if I should skip geometry and go straight to algebra 2, and since some of algebra 2 requires geo, I'll just purchase a geometry for dummies book just for the basic essentials. My highschool goes in order: algebra 1, geo, algebra 2, but they offer an advanced class for algebra 2 for sophomores. I'm in algebra 1 and it's kind of easy for me. I plan on taking pre cal junior year and either pre cal or calculus senior year.

I cannot read to learn math. It has to be hands on for the learning process, like solving equations myself.

If you are an audio learner, take the class. If you can learn by reading about it, don't. And if you have any difficulty, ask your teacher. It's what they're there to do. Good luck!

The Mistakes of our generation

 

I have not lived long enough to tell horrific first-hand stories about General Idi Amin. I don't believe half of them anyway. Maybe when pigs fly, I will attempt to believe that he had a freezer packed with the heads of his victims.

I have however witnessed some pretty gruesome things in this era. I have seen demonstrating civilians used as training dummies/punching bags. I have seen a man surrender with raised hands, only for his arresters to quickly degenerate into a lynch mob, and beat the lights out of him. I have watched in horror as what was supposed to be a simple arrest turned into a free for all. I have seen soldiers walk up and down the length of a man in a manner that oddly reminded me of someone trying to flatten uneven ground. I could go on to explain that here, shooting men with tear gas right in the face from point blank range does not surprise anyone anymore, but I would be doing the other government howlers a disservice.

The stories are not always violent. Some, well...some are just plain sad. Some of my countrymen lie hopelessly on Mulago hospital beds, right around the same time their government is acquiring 300 million dollars from the treasury for classified state house expenses. Oh yes, they then came back a few weeks later, and took another 700 million dollars to buy fighter jets. Now this here is thoroughly mind twisting. Uganda is a tiny, tiny country with no real territorial enemies, and claims that these jets are for protection just annoy everyone. Protect whom? What, the people that are dying in a government hospital without the most basic medicines? Do I even dare to talk about the underpaid, understaffed personnel? Are we talking protection for the guys that are opting to go home AND DIE THERE INSTEAD?

On Sunday, I listened to a gentleman on spectrum. I don't usually listen to political talk shows because of the occasional catastrophically myopic arguments, and I wished I hadn't. He - and with such gusto - defended his government's spending and lazily brushed off the planned million dollar swearing in ceremony as a mere 1 million dollars; like flicking an annoying, immaterial fly off his shoulder. I mean, what is a mere 1 million dollars to a billion already taken, except for the fact that it is forked – at times under threat of arrest - from the pockets of hard working Ugandan men and women, who after the tax have barely anything to live on. Pugh! What is all the fuss about shooting one insignificant woman in the belly when so many have already perished, except for the fact that a precious life has been taken, and a family has been torn apart.

To whom does our government answer? And here is the heart wrenching, in-your-face fact. We did this. We chose our leadership, so complaining about it is not unlike an impatient man that greedily consumes half-cooked pork, and then loudly complains about the constant and excruciating trips to the bathroom.

1+1 is always 2, even when you apply the most complex Einstein-advanced calculus equations. So what do we do? We stick it out for another 5 years and then do the exact same thing: SSDD. I couldn't say that in full. Mother wouldn't be proud.

No, do not buy it. Those books are worthless, I am not even joking.

They do not prepare for the actual course. I would choose a textbook over it.
