How to Select a Niche to Write an Ebook
What is a niche? A niche a segment of a larger market. The three main markets for internet marketing are: health, wealth, and life style. A niche in the health market could be: diet, weight lose, vitamins, quit smoking, alternative therapies, etc.
Finding a niche can seem daunting but with some creative thinking and a little patients you can find the perfect niche to write about.
To begin with pick a topic that interests you. If you find the subject boring or way over your head your not likely to finish. Don't feel you have to pick a topic that you already know about - if you've always been interested in a certain topic know would be a great time to learn more about it. You will also need a topic that interests the most number of people, the whole point of the ebook is to get people to sign up to your email list so you can promote products and services to them.
To start your juices flowing and to give you some ideas try visiting the Dummies.com website. They have been in business for 20 years and they know what people want. Their site is organized by topic and each topic has many books and videos in it. From these books and videos you can get ideas for your niche.
Search through Amazon.com best seller book (nonfiction), magazine, and Kindle sections. Take note of the top selling books and magazines as these are what the largest number of people are interested in. Do a search for "how to" in the best selling nonfiction book section.
Get ideas from eBay pulse. Pulse shows trends, hot picks, cool stuff and popular searches on eBay.com. Search through the category, popular searches and most watched items sections.
ClickBank is a secure online retail outlet for more than 50,000 digital products and 100,000 active affiliate marketers. Visit the marketplace page and search through all the categories or enter key words to find products. Pay attention to the "gravity" of each product - gravity takes into account the number of different affiliates who earned a commission by promoting this product over the past 12 weeks, indicating a popular product.
As I said earlier you need a niche that people want. To check if your niche is a popular one use keyword research to find the actual number of people looking at a niche. Go to "Google Adwords key word tool" and enter your key words relating to your niche (the title of your ebook). Key words are the words people use when they search. Consider search results of over 3,000 per month, you also need to check to competition of the words (how many people are already using this niche). To check the competition enter your words into Google search a look at the results page, their will be a number below the search box - you want a number no higher than 70,000 or 80,000. If you pick a niche that has a high competition it will be more difficult for your ebook to stand out from the rest. Include solution orientated words such as: how do I, how do you, how to fix, how to cure, etc.
You could search through Facebook Like Pages by entering key words in the search bar. Look for pages with new content and a large number of Likes. You could post a question to all your friends with the new "question" button at the top of the screen, asking what topics are the most interesting.
As you search for your niche you will undoubtedly find new ways of discovering what people are interested in. You have the knowledge to find a niche - so get writing.
