How to become a Web Designer from zero ?

I do live in United Kingdom (London). I want to get knowledge and practice in web designing. I am starting from zero. I have only knowledge about MS Office, Internet and computer itself. I prefer to learn myself at home using books, software, internet and so on. How should I begin ? I have bought a book "Dreamweaver 8 for dummies", I did try some HTML coding etc. What should I learn to become a professional Web Designer ? Thanks. Daniel

Steer away from programs like Dreamweaver. They are what is known as "What you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) editors, and they are not a good way to learn web design skills. Designs in these pages break lots of good design practice and prevent you from learning what's going on in the background.

For free, the best rescource on many web development langages is www.w3schools.com. Start with HTML, then CSS, then JavaScript, then......

Be prepared for it to take time.

Also a decent book on HTML that suits your reading style will be invaluable.
