A General Dummy's Guide to processing Legal Translation of Documents in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Arabic is the official language in the UAE. This goes to say that translation, especially legal translation, is a 'basic need' in the UAE for people whose official documents are in English.

In Abu Dhabi, most of the trustworthy translation companies like LinguistHouse are located in Hamdan St. (right at the street that leads to the entrance of Al Noor Hospital). Let these pointers help you when assigning your documents for translation.

1. Not just a native Arabic speaker. Be sure that the translator is also familiar and experienced in handling documents with the same nature as yours. You might wish to try LinguistHouse Translation and Linguistic Services whose translators are well-familiar with the UAE setting, and, are quite known to be the fastest professionals in this area and meticulous of the output's quality.

2. Get Attested. Official documents which originate from outside the country (e.g. Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Diploma, etc.) cannot be honored unless they have the required attestations. For certain purposes, like applying for a residence visa:

  • First, you need the Seal of the Embassy of origin country in the UAE or the UAE Embassy in the origin country.

  • Second, have the document attested from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Once all attestations are completed, you can now acquire the legal Arabic translation of your document, which is what you will submit to the Immigration for visa processing.

3. Present references for the names of the people and companies mentioned in your document since there can be many ways to spell proper names from the 'source' to their 'target' language. Official papers such as passport, ID, visa, and/or company registration certificate will do.

4. If you can, provide an editable soft copy for documents more than 1 page. Text-filled documents are charged by the ‘word count' (total number of words), which translators automatically determine through programs like Microsoft Office. Also, certain legal documents (e.g. Power of Attorney, MOA, etc.) are usually needed bilingual, with English and Arabic texts set beside each other. So bringing a soft copy of the source language can also save you time and money from needing to have the source text typewritten.

5. Help your translator know the writing style and terminologies to use. You can avoid any probable misunderstanding on your documents if you know the following:

  • What type of text is the source document?

  • What is the context of the document?

  • What is your purpose for having your document translated?

  • What's the maximum time you can give the translation company to translate AND proofread the output?

Note that: longer deadlines mean better translation quality, and "too-cheap-to-be-true" rates can mean bad translation.

6. If you are in frequent need of translation, trust one translation partner to ensure consistency in your texts, plus... possibilities of discounted rates!

7. Don't forget to exchange contact numbers with the translation company. It will be convenient for you to resolve any vagueness in your document over the phone, rather than wait at the company while they make the necessary changes.

That's about it. Have a hassle-free translation process!
