exponential functions?

If f(x)=x^2 + 2x +3, then f(a-1) = ....? I am totally clueless on this. I'm trying to study for a calculus placement exam and would like any help (i.e. good website or something) I am also currently reading Calculus for dummies and it doesn't give a good explanation of these types of functions.

(a-1)^2 + 2(a-1) + 3
=a^2 -2a + 1 + 2a - 2 + 3
=a^2 + 2
