Try This Shed Building Info Resource Rather Than a Shed Building "Dummies" Book
A few years ago I promised my wife I'd build a shed to hold her gardening supplies. To seal the deal, she bought me a "shed building for dummies book." It contained lots of useful information. Actually, it provided too much information, and lots of it was unnecessary for me to get the job done.
I'm the kind of guy who just wades right into DIY projects with only a general concept in my mind as to what the final result will look like. My motto is, "Ready, fire, aim."
I frequently launch do-it-yourself building projects without too much preparation. I rarely make a detailed list of the building materials I'll need, or will I work up a rough drawing of the intended result. As for searching the Internet to track down a professionally done set of plans or a working blueprint -- forget it.
Anyone who has built anything knows this is a risky way to construct a structure -- especially a structure as large as a storage shed.
If you're planning to build a storage shed, first get a detailed drawing and building plan for your intended structure before you drive a single nail.
Your building plan should include a comprehensive list of materials. This list will enable you to budget properly. It will also show you what size to cut all the wood pieces so you can assemble them properly.
If you've never built a shed before, make sure of what you plan to accomplish before starting such a project.
These are just a few factors you must consider before building a shed:
- # Selecting an appropriate building site
- # Site preparation
- # Ventilation requirements
- # Installing a source of electricity
- # Security measures
- # Long-term maintenance
There are many "dummies-type" shed construction books on the market that you could use to get smart. However, if you're familiar with tools and have any building experience at all, I'd bet a good set of building plans should give you all the information you need to do a great job.
When you're selecting a set of building plans, it is vital to make sure a professional drew up those plans and that they conform to your local building codes.
It took me a few weeks working weekends to complete the shed for my wife's gardening supplies. I have no doubt I could not have done the job properly if I did not first get a comprehensive building plan. The result would have been a mediocre, unattractive and possibly unsafe building.
However, I built a well-constructed, good looking shed that fits our needs exactly. It went up with a minimum of problems and it meets all of the local building codes.
It was a do-it-yourself success.
