Shed Building for Dummies – Is it Enough?

Last year at Christmas my wife decided that I would be building her a new shed next summer, to reinforce that she bought me the Shed Building for Dummies book as a gift. Okay I thought, I got the short end of the stick on that one but as it turned out that Shed Building for Dummies book was exactly what I needed.

Usually, I just the guy who jumps into a project with only a vague idea of what the finished project will cost in time and money. I also don’t know exactly what it will look like when I am done. I normally will end up making untold number of mistakes, waste a lot of time going to the hardware store and spend a lot of money on extra material. Once I read the Shed Building for Dummies book I now know how to stop wasting time and money on all my projects. Now I don’t build anything without first getting a professionally designed set of plans.

For a large project like a storage shed it is not a very good idea to build one without a set of shed plans. You are really asking for trouble if you start without one. The thing that saves you the most money with a good set of plans is that they will come with an exact material list. That means only one trip for supplies. You will also know exactly how to cut your materials so you can cut everything first and then put it together almost like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Just think how much time that will save you.

There are some good things in the Shed Building for Dummies book but if you have some experience in woodworking all you really need is a good set of plans. The only thing you will need to think about then is will the project be compatible with the local area building codes? Most plans have already taken this into consideration during the design process.

There are quite a few things that you will need to think on before you consider starting to build your shed. You need to figure out what to do about; the foundation, the location, venting, electrical, the finish and finally the maintenance of your shed. If this is your first time with a project of this size you need to have a good plan.

By reading the Shed Building for Dummies book and realizing that I needed a good shed building plan I was able to finish my shed in just a few weeks of part time work. Normally on a project like this I would just jump in with both feet, I’m so glad I didn’t; the end product would probably have been a disaster. It would have been unattractive, inadequate, unsafe and probably would have cost me a great deal more money.

Have you been trying to find a simple solution to your storage needs? If you are looking for an easy way to build the shed you need, then look no farther.
