Anyone know a good book for learning the intricacies of football?
I'm a huge college football fan, but I never played football myself. With the help of Wikipedia I've learned a lot about offensive and defensive formations, but what I'm really looking for is a good book that would explain the ins-and-outs of offenses and defenses...which defenses match up well against certain offenses, which offenses to run based on personnel, etc. For instance, I want to know how to identify a formation in its entirety (ie, shotgun, trips right, slot left) and so on. Anyone know of any good books for this. I've already checked out the "for Dummies" and "Complete Idiot's Guide" books and neither of them looks too great.
Offensive Football Strategies by the American Football Coaches Assotiation. It is a bunch of different articles written by coaches like Joe Paterno, Bear Bryant, Steve Spurrier, Marv Levy, etc. Each articles is detailed with why this play(s) work, when and how to use them. It comes with illustrations of the formations the X's and O's. One of my favorite articles is Steve Spurriers "passing to win" and I'm a Noles fan lol. It's not a book I would say you "can't put down", but is a great refrence written by some of the all time greats in CF. I think it's 15 dollars paperback at Amazon.
