IS PNP inductive proximity sensor function properly if it OP given 24V?

In our Plstic Injection Moulding Machine we are having an Inductive Proximity sensor as 8 in 1 moulded type (8 Sensores moulded in 1 body) with 8 out put lines for each and only one 24V and one 0V lines common to all. In which it is noted recently that the commong 24 V is linked with the 6th sensor O/P line, 0V is linked with the common 0V line and the common24V line is made dummy. Out of these 8 sensors the m/c is utilised with only 4 sensors. It is sure that since 6 months the mc run smoothly. But suddenly one fine mornig the PLC not detect the O/P from these sensors. Then during the service we noticed the above. Then we linked the proper wiring again the sensor functioning propely now. 1.This how happended?
2. Is the O/P of a PNP sensor provide +24V, the sensor work?
3. How it is stopped to work suddenly?
4. Now How this is work after the proper wiring?

a pnp switch is a "sourcing" type of switch, meaning it gives back the 24vdc to the plc. so, yes the switch was working. Remember, everything is in relation to 0v. you may have a problem in your ground or your 0vdc relation to ground. when it was installed, all was good and as shaking occurs in the injection molding process you have developed a problem.
