Soccer Dribbling - 2 Secrets That Will Help Your Game

Dribbling can be used to to exploit free space, create goal scoring opportunities, create 2 on 1 situations and to retain possession when there are no passing options.

It's important that you are continually learning new skills and keep improving the skills you already have, effectively and efficiently with both feet.

It's Crucial that you develop the ability to execute moves using both feet, so you don't become predictable to defenders. When 1V1 with a defender, it should always be the attacker that dictates the play, never the defender. This done by running at defenders with the ball at pace, showing intent, being confident. Their are plenty of dummies or tricks that can fool defenders, either making them over commit or putting them off balance. A few that work exceptionally well are below:

1) The Fake Shot Or Cross

Done by bringing the leg back like you going to make a shot, cross or pass. But just before the obvious intention E.G shot. In the one motion, make a sweeping action, bringing the ball across the other side of your body with the inside of your foot. Robbin Van Persie for Arsenal does this particularly well.

Example: You receive the ball on the right edge of the 18 yard box in a position to cross. But you get your head up ready for the cross but there are none of your team mates in the box. Before you know it you are confronted by a defender. The ball is on your right leg, you bring your leg ready to cross the ball, as bring your leg forward at the last minute you drag the ball with the inside of your right foot over committing the defender, now you can either shoot or pass the ball to a team mate in better position.

2) The Step Over (The Scissors)

Take your right foot and swing it from behind the ball, first towards your left foot making a circle around the ball, after you made the circle then take the ball with the outside of left foot.

Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho have both accomplished techniques when performing this move. But in different ways Ronaldinho tries to sell the move as a fake move then C.Ronaldo. Ronaldo tries to go for speed. They both work for different reasons. All you have to do is find what is most comfortable for you to perform.

Putting Your Moves Into Practice.

You can spend hours o the training pitch perfecting your technique but it comes down to, can you execute these moves in the crunch time of game. I'm not saying don't practice these tricks by yourself, players should be doing that. What i am saying you need to practice these by yourself until you come to a stage where you feel comfortable and have the confidence these moves in game situations. Remember no one will criticize you for trying moves in the right, it's when you try moves in the wrong situations that managers don't like.
