How can I publish a "For Dummies" book?

I have a great idea for the "For Dummies" series of books, and I was wondering how to get it published if I write it myself.

Should I write it and then send it in?
Can companies steal things like that?
Do I have to get what i write copyrighted first? If so, how?

If I did end up publishing this book, how much money would I make?

Nadia, I'm no expert on non-fiction, but I believe the usual procedure is to write a proposal for the "For Dummies" book you could write, which gives the idea of what it would cover, and a first chapter. Then you contact the publisher via query letter, asking for the chance to send your proposal and sample chapter.

Real commercial publishers don't steal. They're not willing to ruin their reputations stealing something they could buy for a few hundred or thousand dollars. And you would not even be sending them a finished product.

You have copyright the moment you produce a work. You do not need to register that copyright before marketing the work. The publisher will copyright the final, edited version.

I have no idea what sort of income you'd be looking at, but I imagine it's below minimum wage for the number of hours it takes to prepare, market, write, edit, and sell a how-to book. Most fiction by unknown authors published by commercial houses makes less than minimum wage for a year's work.
