Using "for dummies" books as a language ad?

I was wondering if the "for dummies" books are good for learning a language?
I'm learning Chinese and Japanese.

Language ad? Presumably you mean language aid. If so, in my experience I've found the "For Dummies" series actually to be quite good. For language, I know only the French one. It's excellent. But I have a few of their non-language ones too, and they are also very good. The only thing you have to get used to is the very stupid style they're written in, but once you learn to ignore that, you'll probably find the information in them to be very helpful. I can't say anything about their Chinese and Japanese books, but if they have them in the series, you can probably expect them to be quite good.
